"I think it's best to let the candidate give his philosophy on how he would build a winning organization," says Chargers president Dean Spanos, who joined Butler in San Diego's sessions. "We would let him talk freely, and then we would ask basic questions. What kind of players do you want? Would you build an offensive or defensive team? How would you hire your assistant coaches? How well do you understand the salary cap?"

"The question you really want answered," says Wolf, "is whether he can handle the job as head coach. When you meet with somebody, when you talk with that person, you know whether you can work with that individual, whether his head is on straight, how objective he is, how prepared he is."

Lack of preparation is the cardinal sin for a prospective coach. He doesn't have to memorize the depth chart of his new team, but if he hasn't already determined whom he plans to hire as his offensive and defensive coordinators, he can kiss his chances goodbye.
