I think we have all of 'em.
I think we used the transition on Price when we dealed him, I just dont know when we get it back.Originally posted by LOSman WINSVanek is Austrian not EuropeanOriginally posted by Prov401Pacquiao isn't asian. We used the franchise tag on Price. Each team can use it once a year.We put it on Price, guaranteeing him a top 5 average WR salary (about 5 million for WRs).
When we traded him, Atlanta renegotiated the deal, and the tag was dropped. Had Atlanta tried to sign Price without the trade, they could have- but they would have to forfeit 2 #1 picks.
Seattle places OT Walter Jones under a franchise tag every year. It might stop this year, as Sean Alexander is up for FAcy and they may use it on him.
Shockingly, Takeo Spikes had the transition tag placed on him by the Bengals, guaranteeing him only a top 10 salary. The difference between that and the franchise tag was only about $750K. Amazingly, it allowed the Bills to oubid the Bengals - and not have to give up any compensation. At the time I was certain that when we got a pick for Price, we would be dealing that to the Bengals for Spikes. I was astonished the Bengals did not do that with him.
The reason why a lot of teams don't use these tags all the time is that they need to have the immediate cap space on hand. The $5 million tag on Price is all salary- so there is no deferring any costs over time with bonuses.

Sometime teams use their Franchise tags on their Punters or kickers- if they have one of the better ones in the league. Even the top kickers and punters make chump change- and many times it's cheaper to tag them rather than give them the highest contract for their position in the NFL.

Transition tag
That's why we were able to sign him without compensation (draft choice)
If he had been Franchised, we would probably not have even tried because it would have required a trade of some sort
