Bmax

If he is the starter who should be the backup ?
I think shane will retire... so who does that leave us .. Troy woodbury and kevin thompson !!!!!!

Her is a parial list of free agents available before teams start releasing players...

1. Kordell Stewart
2. Tony Banks
3. Doug Johnson
4. Jim Miller
5. Jeff Blake
6. Kurt Warner
7. Travis Brown

The back up should be just that a back up who if he had to come in and play and win ..not some one who is coming in to be # 1...

I would go with Miller or banks or stewart....Each has started in the nfl ...10 games starting experience is a must for the job.....

Thoughts......

I'd take Brad Johnson, Jay Fiedler, and Kelly Holcomb.

I like Holcomb and Fiedler a lot.

I don't see that happening.. He'd want too much money to sit tight at backup. I'd seeing Blake, Banks, or Craig Nall backing JP up. Don't knock Nall before you look at his fill-in-time stats this year.

I'd take Fiedler. It would be funny if the bills second string QB was better than the Fins 1st string. (Here's praying that Feelme starts next year  )

McMahon wants to start, he's a fiery young player like JP, and he'd want more money than a usual backup. I'd stick to a vet who knows his place.

Agreed, it's obvious he would be the best backup, but the fact of the matter is, pride and salary issues probably wouldn't allow it.

I know Jay Fiedler has only an average arm but he is very mobile and intelligent. Miami will cut him and he'd be my first choice, based on his significant experience as a starter.

I don't like any of these options- I'd rather have Bledsoe back as a back-up (although at the same time I can't help think that JP might be better off with the distraction).

Look, in the event that Losman goes down or has to be pulled, none of these guys will win games for us on their own. To me, the most important thing is keeping the cap hit as low as possible.

[QUOTE=OpIv37] none of these guys will win games for us on their own. QUOTE]

Bledsoe couldn't either. The difference being a guy like Fiedler wouldn't make as many dumb plays/turnovers as Bledsoe. He might even be able to scramble 5 yards for a first down.

Bledsoe = Zero hope

Stewart. He knows MM/TC and is mobile, so the gameplan wouldn't have to be altered that much if he had to come in. Otherwise I'd say Holcomb.

Stewart makes the most sense. He knows the offense and and has the experience to pass along. Blake has to be high on the list.

I could also see the Bills retaining Matthews and sign Tim Hasselbeck as a 3rd stringer. Tim was with Buffalo for a brief time a couple years ago.

Brad Johnson doesn't offer anything to the team. Top dollar Drew Bledsoe like player. Might as well just resign Drew.

Key

UFA: Unrestricted Free Agent; a player who has completed four or more accrued seasons and whose contract has expired.

RFA: Restricted Free Agent; a player who has completed three accrued seasons and whose contract has expired.

Released: A player released by his team with years remaining on his contract.

Grade: Insider and Scouts Inc have come up with a rating system for the best Free Agents on the market. Grades are from 0-100.

90-100: Elite Player
Player demonstrates rare abilities and can create mismatches that have an obvious impact on the game. ... Premier NFL player with all the skills to consistently play at a championship level... Rates in the top 5 at his position in the league.

80-89: Outstanding Player
Player has abilities to create mismatches against most opponents in the NFL. ... A feature player who has an impact on the outcome of the game. ... Cannot be shut down by a single player and plays on a consistent level week in and week out. ... Rates at the top 10 at his position in the league.

75-79: Solid Starter
Solid starter who is close to being an elite player. ... No glaring weaknesses and will usually win his individual match-up, but does not dominate in every game, especially when matched against the top players in the league. ... Will usually rate in the top 20 players at his position in the league.

70-74: Good Starter
Good starter who is usually a consistent player with excellent competitiveness and is the heart of the team, but is not a dominant player against the better players he faces on a weekly basis. ... Gives you great effort, and you are glad he is on your team, but he may or may not go to the next level.

65-69: Adequate Starter
This player is an adequate starter who will give a solid effort week in and week out, but he is overmatched against the better players in the league. ... His weaknesses will be exposed, and he will not survive most man-to-man matchups. ... He is a player you like having on your team, but he is never going to be a star, and you could live with him. ... He defines the term "blue collar."

60-64: Good Backup
This is a player who is really on the bubble and only starts because of a team's deficiency at the position. ... He lacks complete overall skills, and although he will battle, he will hinder his team's ability to play at a championship level if forced to be in the starting lineup consistently over a 16-game season. ... This player needs to be a solid contributor in the kicking game or show great versatility at his position to keep his roster spot. ... He is a player you don't mind having on your team, but you are always looking to upgrade.

55-59: Adequate Backup
This is strictly a backup player who is not capable of starting. ... If forced to start, he is only a short-term fix. ... He may make the team because of special teams contributions or experience. ... He is a player you are always looking to upgrade, and you must be aware of alerts in this category, such as age, injury, etc.

50-54: Marginal Backup
This player is hanging on by a thread and is only on your team because there is nobody else to take his place. ... He has significant weaknesses in his game. ... He is not close to being a starter, and he is only an adequate contributor on special teams. ... This is a player you want to replace as quickly as possible.

45-49: Poor Player
Emergency fill-in player who may or may not know the system and has little value other than level of his experience. ... Likely to be a weekly emergency-type player who fills in because of injuries. ... Not a long-term solution, and not a player you want to keep around any longer than necessary.

If I had to pick a solid backup /tutor for JP (and a 3rd stringer too), and assuming we would have up to $2.5 -$3 Million to spend on them, I'd seriously consider Jim Miller and Mike McMahon.

Miller is a former Steeler vet who could help tutor and be third string. McMahon is a quality 2nd stringer with talent- could be another Volek with the right coach.

Holcombe would also be worth a look. I would also consider Charlie Batch.

Brees and Hassleback will command $5-$7 million
Warner wants to start- I can't see him being a clipboard caddy behind a rookie again.
Carter is in rehab- missed a playoff game because of it.

I would stay with Matthews or take either Holcomb or Garcia(expected to be cut) if he would settle for a backup role.

My money is on Batch in that he is familiar with Mularky's/Clements' system and will come cheap....He is not old and tired either...would be a servicable backup for at least three years.

Would love to see Holcomb here, that guy is a player....but I think he might want to be somewhere where the incumbant will be gone in a couple years.

Blake and Frerotte would both be options I would be comfortable with in terms of price and skill.
Not much else out there that we can afford....Banks maybe, or maybe there is a RFA out there? We won't be drafting another QB.
