TESTAVERDE RETURN UNCERTAIN

The New York media's reports regarding the return of quarterback Vinny Testaverde from an injured thumb range from "any day now" to one-to-two weeks, or longer.

According to a league source, the truth is that the specific date for Testaverde's return is uncertain. He could be back at practice as soon as Friday, and he could be out longer.

Plus, he could have trouble with the thumb all season. Last year, Rams signal-caller Kurt Warner banged his throwing-hand thumb on a helmet (as did Testaverde earlier this week), and Warner was bothered by the bum thumb all season long. Nearly eleven months later, Warner is still fielding questions about the injury -- and he's still wearing a brace in practice.

In Vinny's absence, Chad Pennington is taking nearly all of the snaps with the first-team offense, with third-stringer Tory Woodbury get some of the action.

A league source tells us that the players are surprised that fourth-stringer Gus Ornstein isn't getting much of an opportunity, with only three healthy arms available. Ornstein, a second-year player from Rowan College, looked "very good" in off-season "Organized Team Activity."
