ESPNews reports the San Diego Chargers have placed their "franchise" tag on QB Drew Brees, who becomes an unrestricted free agent March 2. The Chargers will now have the ability to match any offer sheet Brees receives on the open market. Should they choose not to, the team would receive two first-round draft picks as compensation for him.

Mark Curnutte, of the Cincinnati Enquirer, reports the Cincinnati Bengals have placed their "franchise" tag on RB Rudi Johnson, who was slated to be an unrestricted free agent March 2. The tag carries a $6.3 million value for the 2005 season. As previously reported, Johnson has said he would be willing to sit out the 2005 season if he were tagged as the team's franchise player.

The Philadelphia Eagles have announced they have placed their franchise tag on DT Corey Simon, who is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent March 2.

Jay Glazer, of Fox Sports, reports on Foxsports.com that New York Jets DE John Abraham has been informed by the team that they will designate him their franchise player. Thus, the Jets will have to pay him the average of the top-five players at his position, which should be more than $7 million for the 2005 season.

The Associated Press reports the New Orleans Saints are expected to designate DE Darren Howard their franchise player to limit his mobility in the free agent market this year. "He's a really good player," general manager Mickey Loomis said. "We've got a lot of time and effort invested in him, and we don't want to see it go to waste. He had a really good year for us last season, and we want to keep as many good players here as we can." The franchise tag would require the Saints to pay Howard a $7.8 million base salary in 2005.
