that the Bills and Cards have agreed in principle to a Henry for Shelton deal, pending physicials :D

I have worked this out:

If the Bills do a simple restructure of Shelton's $3 million salary, the trade is cap neutral because both players are in the top 51

Henry cap number: $1.35 million ($1.25 million salary + $100,000 proration)

Shelton's cap number: $3 million each of the next 4 yrs

Shelton's minumum salary for his NFL experiece is $665,000

Convert $2.335 million ($3 million - $665,000) to signing bonus. It gets prorated over 4 yrs at $583,375/yr. Shelton's 2005 cap number is now $665,000 + $583,375 = $1,248,750

Cap savings from Henry: $1.25 million

Cap hit for Shelton: $1,248,750

Bills save $1,250 on cap, have addressed LT situation, and subtracted a malcontent

 Decent Trade. I think Henry could have garnered a little more, but I guess when you get benched an dhave an injury history, and then demand to be traded, you get sent to NFL purgatory in Arizona. Arizona is a good fit for him though, They now have quality at the RB situation to go along with that talented WR corps. I like what DennY Green is doing. I think Green disliked Shelton. There were rumors that Shelton may end up in Miami along with a second rounder for Surtain. I would much rather keep Pat, sign Jennings, or get our hands on Chris Samuels somehow.

Anyhow, if this is true, and Buffalo is able to re-work the contract, congrats. Personally, I think he is about the same as Jennings, but the big bonus is that he is cheaper.

Great! Now put Shelton at RT and move Williams to LT and I think we mantain a solid line.

Well if this is true then we know that JJ is gone for sure.

td really does seem to have a knack for replacing decent players with other cheaper decent players.

i hope for big pat to stay, but if we also get a better LG (the whale would be nice) and perhaps draft a center, our line would be super charged.

Great trade, particularly if we can restructure Shelton to make it cap neutral. Even if we have to give up some cap room, it won't be nearly as much JJ would cost us. And I think McNally will get the most out of Shelton - which should be close to the injury-prone JJ.

Excuse my ignorance in Cap calculations but...when you convert 2.335 million which is what is left after you take out the minimum salary, you prorate that over 4 years...but Shelton is getting 3 Million a year...not 3 million the 1st year only and then $665,000 each subsequent year. What happened to the 2.335 million that he should be getting each subsequent year? ...So I guess I don't understand - unless you are saying make it cap friendly just for this year, and the following years we'll deal with the salary and proration of the 1st year since we won't have Bledsoe's cap hit...

So over the next two years, after next year, his cap number would be $3.5 mil?

After the way the team played against deep scrubs the name Boils would be appropriate.

Man I hope they can close that deal. An established first round tackle for Henry would be terrific. Even if he does have any attention issues I'll bet McNally and company could whip him into shape. And I'd love to see Henry in that offense. They'd become my adopted NFC favorites.

I'm only converted the $3 million salary in 2005, not 2006-2008.

His present cap numbers (if acquired) would be: $3 million in each 2005-2008

New cap numbers would be: $1,248,750(2005), $3,583,375(2006-2008)

If he doesn't work out, Bills could release him and save cap space in any year accept 2005

I thought our OLine was minus and plus a player from being good last year...Blew was the minus and I hope Shelton is the plus.

I'm glad we got something decent for Henry as well....I think his career is on the decline. He was a punishing runner for a couple years....but he just can't last in the NFL with his style of game and it shows.

I really hope this deal goes through. Last year during training camp it appeared that Dennis Green was just going to cut Shelton. So the fact that we might actually get a quality RB for him is great. Our Running game has sucked over the last 5 years and it was supposed to be our strength because of all the money we had tied up in the OL. That OL has never lived up to expectations.

Shelton is an average tackle. He is much better at pass protection than run blocking. My biggest knock on him is his inconsistancy. It just seems that he has a major brain fart 3-4 times a game that always seems to happen at a critical part of the game.

I think this trade works for all parties and I hope it gets confirmed on the first of march!

During the 2004 season, Shelton extended his contract. Basically he makes $3 million a year. Which I think is a cap friendly number for a LT.

The problem was for the Cardinals he wasn't playing LT. Leonard "Big" Davis won that spot from him during training camp.

You'll recognize those same cerebral gas explosions in Henry, when he misses a key block ( by refusing to block) or trips over his own feet on a 3rd and short.

Henry is a good RB who takes way too many hits. He's a good transition guy until your next guy is ready. He'll be beat to hell by then.

I think the X factor is that Shelton is signed for 4 years so we do not have to worry about filling the spot in the near future. I am glad Shelton is a better pass blocker than run blocker since he will be protecting Losman's blind side. We are set on the right side to run the ball..

I don't think that it's especially urgent that the Bills restructure Shelton's contract to make this a cap neutral deal. It's a given that Jennings jumps ship. What is more to the point IMHO is Shelton's cap numbers compared with Jennings' cap numbers last year.
