Poor defensive drafting?

Top defensive picks last 5 years: DE Erik Flowers (2000/1st), FS Travares Tillman (2000/2nd), LB Corey Moore (2000/3rd), CB Nate Clements (2001/1st), DE Aaron Schobel (2001/2nd), DT Ron Edwards (2001/3rd), DE Ryan Denney (2002/2nd), S Coy Wire (2002/3rd), DE Chris Kelsay (2003/2nd), LB Angelo Crowell (2003/3rd), DT Tim Anderson (2004/3rd.)

Only Clements, Schobel, and possibly Kelsay and Edwards stand out to me as good picks. You should forget McGee who was a 4th rounder. It looks like we need better D drafting for sure. Our awesome defense was built mainly by UFAs, which shows our scouts for UFAs are doing a great job.

Yeah, I actually see some pretty good defensive drafting in the TD years.

The 2000 draft sucked. One of the worst in the history of drafts.

If you look at 2001 and on it isn't bad at all. Clements, Schobel, Kelsay all starters. Denny isn't great but he is a decent NFL caliber player. Crowel is a good special teamer and back up. Its hard for Tim Anderson to get playing time behind Adams, Williams and Edwards all good players.

I don't think its all that bad. The 2000 draft is what really hurts the overall outlook of it.

The draft and Free agency go hand in hand. If you get excellent players (Spikes, Fletcher, Adams) in FA you will look to fill other holes. You got to loook at the two as a package.

Every year there are like what 250-300 players drafted in the NFL. They can't all make it. Go through the 2000 draft for each team and tell me how many of the guys make an impact today, especially from the 2nd round on.

Agreed. The point is we have the #2 D in the league and we were #1 in turnovers. I don't care if the players come from the draft or FA- the defensive product on the field is good.

??? Huh? Have you been keeping track of our draft picks???

2004: 4th rd pick: Tim Euhus - Was doing extremely well before the injury. Still has potential to do great. 7th rd pick: Fast Freddie wasn't super fantastic but did contribute every now and then.

2003: 4th rd pick: Terrance McGee has been phenomenal on ST and is rapidly developing into a #2 shutdown CB. 7th Rd Mario Haggan has been contributing to ST.

2002: 5th rd pick: Justin Bannan has been a solid backup. 6th rd pick: Kevin Thomas is now our 3rd CB - has had injuries but overall been decently solid when he did play.

Undrafted picks: Moorman was undrafted and has been phenomenal. Jason Peters was also undrafted last year and did decent in ST and may begin to contribute more this year.

I don't think TD has done bad at all. JP may prove to be the jewel crown - although it's hard to believe he could beat the pick of WM...
