HASLETT EXTENSION COMING

The Saints and coach Jim Haslett have reached an agreement on compensation for a contract extension, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune. G.M. Mickey Loomis told the Times-Picayune that only "non-financial issues" remain.

The new contract would cover five years, and it would dramatically increase Haslett's $900,000 salary for 2002. Recent reports have suggested that the Saints offered as much as $2.5 million per year for Haslett's services.

Though the Times-Picayune provides no specific details regarding the "non-financial issues" that must be resolved, we've previously reported that Haslett wants control over personnel decisions.

G.M. Mickey Loomis, a "cap-and-contracts" guy who is operating under a one-year contract, relies heavily on Rick Mueller for personnel decisions. Both Loomis and Rick Mueller have close ties to former G.M. Randy Mueller, who was fired unexpectedly in May. To say the least, Loomis's long-term status in the Bayou is uncertain.

Still, in some circles, the rumor is that Haslett doesn't want the full-blown coach/G.M. duties. Regardless, Haslett might be angling for an arrangement similar to Mike Martz's situation in St. Louis. Martz has final say on personnel issues -- without carrying the full range of a G.M.'s job description.
