Kansas City has emerged as the leading suitor for cornerback Patrick Surtain, but a deal Sunday didn't seem imminent.

Chiefs President Carl Peterson told the Kansas City Star that he has spoken with Surtain's agent, Gary Uberstine, about a contract.

But a source said Sunday that the Dolphins haven't recently spoken with Peterson about a trade, indicating contract parameters must be agreed upon first.

"It's in the hands of Miami," Peterson said. "They're looking for a draft choice. And it's also in the hands of the agent, who's looking for a big contract. We've talked, but the number is too big.

"If it gets reasonable, then fine. The first part is do the dollars make sense? Now they're a little high."

Although considered one of the NFL's best cornerbacks, Surtain was given permission to seek a trade last month when it became apparent the Dolphins would not offer a lucrative contract extension.

Surtain has one year remaining on his current deal, which makes reaching agreement on an extension a must for any suitor.

If the cheifs land Surtain for any less than a 2nd then its highway robbery. If they get for a mid rounder this year and next KC just screwed Miami over and I hope the Sun-Sentinel is accurate. Miami needs top 2 round picks esp this year with this class. Losing surtain is gonna hurt next year regardless of how ready Will Poole is.

I am just glad that Miami is trying to get all these 1st day draft picks. This year's draft is more of a crap shoot than previous years. And I hope Miami sucks ass.

they are rumored to have offered a 2nd round pick and a 4th round this year and a later pick next year, but it's all rumors. Nobody knows, because Saban doesn't tell.
