The Jaguars remain in the hunt for Derrick Mason and will have one less suitor for Reggie Hayward as the NFL's free-agency period approaches.

Free agency begins Wednesday, but Mason is free to sign before then because the former Tennessee Pro Bowl wide receiver was cut last week for salary-cap reasons along with five other key Titans players.

Mason, who had 191 catches and 15 touchdowns the past two seasons, said he has narrowed his list to Jacksonville, Baltimore, Cincinnati and both New York teams. The Jaguars continue to be his first choice after they recently hired his Tennessee position coach, Steve Walters, for the same job.

The Jaguars remain in discussions with Mason's agent, Peter Schaffer, but team officials indicated a deal before the start of free agency was unlikely. Mason is 31 years old and looking for a deal with an average salary of $5 million, both of which are making the Jaguars pause.

Hayward, meanwhile, cannot be signed until Wednesday, when the former Denver defensive end is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent.

The Jaguars have confirmed interest in Hayward, who had 10 1/2 sacks last season, and will be in even better position to pursue him after the Broncos revealed Monday that they do not intend to re-sign the 25-year-old veteran.
