Wonder how the Avs got good

Look at the guys they drafted #1 while they were the Nordiques:

1989 - Quebec Mats Sundin RW Nacka (Sweden)

1990 - Quebec Owen Nolan RW Cornwall (OHL)

1991 - Quebec Eric Lindros C Oshawa (OHL)

They moved each of these guys for lots of talent that made them a powerhouse...

What's your point? That Regier can trade Tim Connolly for "tons of talent" like Quebec did with those guys?

Nah- the only guys we have who have trade value that could help our team are the young goalies.
Argue like hell. Keep it clean. And when it's over, shake hands and root for our team!

I could handle it if they traded one of the goals...I don't think it will happen though. Reiger has it in his head that the only way to win and keep it cheap is to have solid goaltending and a bunch of other players. Hence, his relutance to move one of the three.

This is how Colorado did it...

Made the city of Quebec suffer wih a dismal hocky franchise for years, and accumulated high #1 draft picks.

Traded these guys for more, better players.

Moved to Colorado, won the whole pot of chilli.

Soooo.... if the Sabres continue to suck, accumulate a wealth of high picks, move to Portland or Seattle, then the Cup is ours!!!

Lindros brought them Peter Forsberg, Mike Ricci, Ron Hextall, Chris Simon, Kerry Huffman, Steve Duchesne, two first-round picks (one used to select Jocelyn Thibault and the other traded twice, eventually used by the Capitals to draft Nolan Baumgartner) and $15 million.

The Rangers were shut out at the last second by an arbritrator, when Quebec tried to pull out of the Philly deal. the Rangers benefited from not landing Lindros. Their deal with the Nordiques for Lindros would have included a goaltender (Mike Richter or John Vanbiesbrouck) a forward (Tony Amonte or Adam Graves), Alexei Kovalev, James Patrick and $20 million .

Great article on the deal here

The Avalanche then stole Patrick Roy and Canadien's gritty captain Mike Keane to Colorado for young goalie Jocelyn Thibault and wingers Andrei Kovalenko and Martin Rucinsky.
