As they kept their fingers crossed while awaiting the decision of their targeted backup quarterback, the Vikings began re-stocking their receiver corps Tuesday.
Free agent Travis Taylor, the 10th overall pick in the 2000 draft, agreed to terms on a two-year contract worth $2 million. The Vikings have targeted Taylor as their No. 3 receiver but agent Mitch Frankel said he believes Taylor will compete for a starting job.
"It's a great opportunity for Travis to go into an offense like that," Frankel said. "He knows he'll have a quarterback like Daunte Culpepper who has been to the Pro Bowl, something he hasn't always had."
Playing with eight different quarterbacks in five years with the Baltimore Ravens, Taylor has caught 204 passes for 2,758 yards and 15 touchdowns in his career. He will open training camp behind projected starters Nate Burleson and Marcus Robinson, in part because the Vikings view him as an ideal slot receiver.
"He will have the chance to showcase his skills with us," said coach Mike Tice, who first met Taylor during a March 3 visit to Winter Park.
Even after acquiring Taylor, the Vikings plan to monitor the situation around free agent receiver Plaxico Burress -- who turned down a multi-year offer last week and has hired Drew Rosenhaus as his new agent. The Vikings remain interested in Burress at their price, and they also continue to eye Washington receiver Rod Gardner for a possible trade.
