Extent of Hecht's head injury unknown

ESPN

Associated Press

Buffalo Sabres forward Jochen Hecht lost part of his right ear after being struck in the side of the head with a puck on Saturday night.

"It's not a pretty sight,'' Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said after the Sabres rallied for a 4-3 victory over Washington. "Once we get him off the (trainer's) table, and I don't think he's off yet, we'll see how he feels.''

Hecht was hurt seven minutes into the third period after the Sabres won a faceoff deep in the Capitals zone. Hecht, who wears a protective visor, was tumbling to the ice after appearing to lose his balance, and was hit by teammate Brian Campbell's point shot

Jesus you're kidding me. I hope they can sew it back on, or that he's not maimed for life. Geez.

Gosh, that's awful! He's a good looking guy too. I hope they're able to either sew his ear back together or make some sort of fake ear for him. Yuck! I never realized how maming hockey can be.

John Butchegross (sp?) of ESPN reports that Hecht's ear was sewn back on and will heal. He was also shocked that NO CONCUSSION was inflicted by the puck when Sabres Defenseman Brian Campbell's slap shot struck Hecht in the melon.

C'mon now.... this was a Sabres slap shot... those can't break through toilet paper...

Speedy recovery, Jochen!

Now he'll never go in front of the net again.

Um, he wasn't in front of the net at the time anyway

Hecht will sure feel comfortable seeing Zhitnik wind up for a slap shot in the future...

He wes not in front of the net (He was in the faceoff circle) and it was Campell's shot (not Zhitnik- he'ds been out for 2 weeks)

What kills me about these injuries is that when any new hockey helmet comes out of the box, it has "earguards" as standard equipment...little clear plastic bits that cover the bottom of the ear, while not causing any loss to hearing. The players make a conscious effort to remove them.

If he gets his ear shot off in the face off circle than I know he will never go in front of the net. Especially when Mr. Head Shot Zhitnik comes back

But then again.................in front of the net is probably the safest place to be when Zhitnik is shooting

LOL. Good point.

Hey BD, I saw someone being interviewed the other night who still had earguards on his helmet, so there's at least one smart guy out there. I don't remember who it was though.

Exactly. You definately don't want to be within 15 feet of either side of the posts when Zhitnik is shooting. The safest spot is in front of the net. He only goes there about 3 times a year...

You beat me to it. I took mine out...first thing I did actually. You just don't expect your ear to be injury prone. It's eyes, teeth, and not necessarily in that order with some guys.
