According to ESPN.com and my own interpretations:

Total value (minus escalators is $16,831,250 and is for 6 yrs. Signing bonus is $7.500,000 and that isd amortized at $1.25 million/season)

Cap number for 2002: $2.175 million

Mike Williams' deal has salaries of $925,000 (2003), $1,156,000 (2004), $1,388,000 (2005), $1,618,800 (2006), $1,250,000 (2007), and $1,168,750 (2007).

The contract also has option/buyout of $3 million (payable prior to 2003 season) for 2006 and $1.25 million (do not know when it's due) for 2007. If the $3 million option is exercised (before 2003 season), the salaries for 2003-2005 change to $556,250, $475,000, and $706,250 respectively. These option/buyout monies most likely are not amortizable, thus his cap numbers for future years are as follows (assuming exercising and non-amortizability of the option payments):

2003: salary $556,250, amortized bonus $1,250,000, and option pymt $3 million = $4,806,250

2004: salary $475,000 and amortized bonus $1,250,000 = $1,725,000

2005: salary $706,250 and amortized bonus $1,250,000 = $1,956,250

2006: salary $1,250,000 and amortized bonus $1,250,000 = $2.5 million

2007: salary $1,168,250, amortized bonus $1,250,000, and option pymt $1,250,000 = $3,668,250

It is highly likely that this deal will change if Mike Williams meets the expectations of being the #4 overall draft choice!

Thanks for the info. Looks like if they keep MW on this contract for a few years and he ends up being a decent LT, he could really give the Bills some great value per cap hit in 2004-2006.

Donahoe is trying to do the impossible, Build a dynasty in an era of the salary cap that is ruining pro football.
My question to you is "Can you have a team win 3, 4 or 5 Superbowls in a decade with the salary cap?"
I say no, but Donahoe is sure going to try and give it a shot.

It can be done if a team drafts extremely well. Solid drafting allows a team to be more judicial in re-signing FAs. Bills let CB Jeff Burris leave because his replacement Winfield was already on the team. That's why drafting WR Josh Reed in rd 2 made tremendous sense.....he will probably step in for Price after this season

That looks like a really small contract for a #4, what are the escalators.

and we may never know what the other bonuses are until they are hit (team wins, pro bowls, playoffs, etc).

TD is just sick. Getting rookies to sign multi teared bonuses means that everyone on the team realize that no one is gonna get a free ride to big cash.

On the other hand, the claims that TD is cheap and is willing to tear a team apart is clearly false, he is willing to pay the money, just not all up front (Butler) and not to an injured or questionable player (Cowart, Riley, Jackson, a couple of other DTs). If his rookies from the lower rounds pay off we are gonna be good.

Details of Big Mike's contract:

- $7.275M SB on signing spread over 6 years length (4 years, plus options for 2006 & 2007) at $1,212,500 per season.

- Base: $962,500 in 2002; $558,125 in 2003; $486,250 in 2004; $726,875 in 2005; $967,500 in 2006; $1,208,125 in 2007.

- $3.225M 2006 Option/Buyout due in 2003, spread at $645,000 per season from 2003-2007.

- $1.25M 2007 Option/Buyout due in 2004, spread at $312,500 per season from 2004-2007.

- Cap Numbers are currently figured using base plus bonuses (including options). 2002 - $2,175,000; 2003 - $2,415,625; 2004 - $2,656,250; 2005 - $2,896,875; 2006 - $3,317,500; 2007 - $3,378,125.

- Escalators and incentives could increase the deal to a total of $44M for the 6 year length.

- One time $1.25M NLTBE for minimum p/t & team NLTBE any season.

- up to $1M Pro Bowl honors.

- One-time $550K NLTBE in 2003.

- 2005 Escalates to $4M base + $3M roster bonus. $1.5M other NLTBE in 2005.

- 2006 Escalates to $4M base + $3M roster bonus (option year). $1.5M other NLTBE in 2006.

- 2007 Escalates to $5M base (option year). $3.5M other NLTBE in 2007.

*** The deal is structured in a manner that Williams' will have palatable cap hits if he is a decent player, but if he is a very good player the Escalators that kick in after 3 seasons will force the Bills into signing him to a long-term extension at top money.
