Looks Like Colts will get new stadium

The current plan was drafted in large part by Gov. Mitch Daniels and Republican Sen. Luke Kenley of Noblesville, chairman of the Senate Tax Committee. Its funding would rely on Marion County doubling its 1 percent restaurant tax, and the seven counties next to Indianapolis adopting a 1 percent restaurant tax.

The increase in Indianapolis food and beverage taxes would raise an estimated $17 million for the project annually. The tax in adjacent counties would raise about $10 million, with the counties keeping half and the other half going to the project.

The plan also would raise Marion County taxes on hotels and auto rentals. People attending Colts games would pay a $3 ticket tax, and those attending other events at the new stadium would pay a $1 tax.

The Colts would contribute $100 million, and the bill includes various other funding sources.

Good for Colts but probably bad for Indiana. More of the impact should fall directly on people who will benefit (NFL, team, media & it 365 days a year). While spreading it around makes it harder to avoid (I avoid City of Alexandria just because of their 4% restaurant tax and just go to same restaurants, often same chain of restaurants in neighboring Fairfax County) but does not make it fairer.

Paying for the stadiums out of public funds is just a bad idea.

Doing something like what Mass did for the Pats stadium where they built up roads and such to support the building but no direct financing for the building itself is the way to do it. Doing anything else just harms the economy by robbing Peter to pay Paul.

Man, the Pats can be hard to hate at times.
