State see discussions as negotiating ploy
Associated Press

NEW ORLEANS -- State officials say they are not surprised by a report that New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson is looking at San Antonio as a possible new home for the team, labeling the threat a bargaining tactic.

Benson recently cut off talks with the state about a new long-term agreement to keep the Saints in New Orleans until after the upcoming season.

"It doesn't surprise us at all that they will be rattling the saber a little bit to bring more tension to the situation," said Doug Thornton, regional vice president of SMG, the company that operates the Superdome. "This is not new. This is what NFL teams do."

Why another NFL team in Texas? I'm not so sure the Texans or the Cowboys would be too keen about that. His threat is empty.

LA Bills? :nervous:

LA Chargers has a better ring to it...since they started out there anyway

kind of misleading of a subject title no?

regardless.... I think the NFL would be pretty adamant about only allowing the saints to move to LA. I think Jones and the Houston owner would blow a gasket otherwise.

I got you to read it no? :snicker:

I could honestly care less bout N.O. They are about as worthless as Arizona.

good point...

and about Arizona.

How is it possible that they are building a new stadium when they have HORRIBLE attendance. There are 10 Cowboys fans to every Cardinals fan in Arizona. I think they have a good young team and will be very good in the near future (as soon as they get a QB at least)

i can't see how they were not the PERFECT team to move to LA.

actually San Antonio is a viable site Tom benson owns several car dealerships in San Antonio, and the dome was built for football ( Red McCombs wanted a team in San antonio) that is a football starved town the cowboy did a few mini camps there drew well they are about 400 miles from Dallas and 200 from Houston but they could support an NFL team, Hell Austin puts 80k in the stands for UT and it is about 1/3 the size as San Antonio

My sister lives in San Antonio, and they are definitely starved for an NFL team. I believe that, aside from LA, SA is the largest market without an NFL franchise.

They should move the Phins to Havana. Won't be much of a difference, and the stadium might actually be half full on sundays.

The state handed the New Orleans Saints (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=nor) a check for $12,415,267.53 Tuesday, its annual multimillion dollar payment to keep the team in Louisiana, according to Louisiana Superdome official Bill Curl.

Under a 10-year, $186 million agreement negotiated by former Gov. Mike Foster's administration in 2001, the state makes annual payments to the Saints. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2100978
