Welcome to the BZFL Rookie Draft for 2005.

The Ebenezer Norsemen have the first pick and are on the clock. Now.

Good morning and welcome to the 2005 BZFL Rookie Selection Meeting. I'm Chris Berman from ESPN and over the course of the next four days we will be here with you as teams pick potential future stars and try to fill holes. So, sit back, relax, pop a couple and if you're scoring at home....good for you!!

The Ebenezer Norsemen, having acquired the first pick overall from the Golden Brewsers of Denver, are on the clock. For the last two weeks speculation has run high that the Norsemen will select, who many people is the best talent in the draft, Braylon Edwards, WR from Michigan. While that is the most likely choice, Norsemen owner Ebenezer has surprised people before with his selection. Offensive minded, nobody suspected he would make Julius Peppers his first overall selection in the Stocking Draft.

With the first selection in the 2005 BZFL Rookie Draft, the Ebenezer Norsemen select, WR, Braylon Edwards, University of Michigan.

Selected for his natural talent and ability, we feel that Edwards is THE best player in the draft and the best WR to come out of college in a long time. Having played at the highest level in college, Edwards is the all-time leading receiver for the Wolverines. At 6'3" and 210 pounds, he has the leaping ability to join the elite receivers of the NFL. With the Norsemen he will have an opportunity to learn under a veteran cast and grow into the position. We love his leadership ability and look forward to having Edwards in uniform for a long time.

The offices at 7 Assassins Plaza have been abuzz lately w/ activity, as Executive Vice President/General Manager Kevin Colbert, Director of Player Personnel Phil Savage, and Owner/President R. Rich have been busy paring down the choices to 7:

CB Carlos Rogers was one we considered, but decided not to go that high for a CB, even though we consider him the best CB in this draft.

WRs Mike Williams and Troy Williamson were also candidates, but the team felt we should go in another direction and that the 2nd overall pick was a bit high for either player.

LB/DE 'tweeners Shawne Merriman and Demarcus Ware were very high on the list, as the Assassins love to put pressure on quarterbacks and both are outstanding pass rushers. Merriman was eliminated first, but Ware went down to the wire as we were very impressed by him.

The last of the players to miss the cut is Erasmus James. He is a very good pass rusher, but is a bit small to be dominant in our 3-4 scheme and isn't as dominant a rusher as other smallish DEs have been (like Bruuuce Smith and Dwight Freeney).

That leaves our actual choice. As many here know, the Assassins are all about having a dominant defense and so we have decided to select the best defensive player on our board. This guy is a monster pass rusher, is very impressive in coverage, and can make things happen in the open field. He is good to create turnovers and to disrupt the flow of the offense. He was at the top of our list almost from day one and will help make our defense more athletic, quicker, and scary! So...

the Erie Assassins select Derrick Johnson, LB from the University of Texas with the 2nd pick in the 2005 rookie draft.

Great pick....

Devin has made my decision for me.

With an aging starting CB in Tory James the CRK's are very happy to see their top CB prospect drop into their hands hands, and also will give them an ELITE KR/PR man for many years to come and draft their new shutdown CB:

CB Adam "Pacman" Jones - West Virginia

ryjam282
06-06-2005, 11:44 AM
The Super Deuces have had a tough time deciding on who to take here. They could easily take a safety but have decided to let Chris Hope develop for a season and see what he has to offer. We could take a DE in Marcus Spears but aren't too keen on him and so that leaves us with our pick....He has the ability to rush the passer from the DE position and plays well in coverage as an OLB and will fit in nicely in our 3-4 scheme for years to come, not to mention, he is one of the best tacklers in the draft. So without further adieu:

The Super Deuces select Shawne Merriman OLB/DE - University of Maryland

Nice pick there, Spaz.

The Erie Assassins were just ecstatic to see that 2 players they really like are still available here. They traded up to get in a position to draft either one of them, so now they have to choose.

This is a tough choice to make. Had Mark Clayton not been picked by the Spartans, he would've been first. The next 2 players on our board were tied for 2nd on our board. We decided to take the next player because he fits our defensive scheme to a T: he's very aggressive, a sound tackler, and can intimidate players who try to take him on. He's also just scratching the surface of his abilities and should only get better w/ time. We are absolutely thrilled that he lasted until our 19th pick and will waste no more time in making him a member of the Assassins, so...

the Erie Assassins select Thomas Davis, S/LB from Georgia with our 19th pick in the first round.

The Wookiees clearly have some holes to fill but the GM took over the team knowing it would not happen overnight. So, we move to the defensive side of the ball and will take a youngster who is solid in all aspects of his game.

Marcus Spears DE - LSU Tigers

The Super Deuces are happy to move back into the 2nd round and move to the offensive line now. With a high priced OT in Marvel Smith and Tom Ashworth both needing to show there worth this guy should give them the push they need to be dominant.
