Bonus money can be spread 3 years beyond the end of the CBA, which means until 2009.

The June 2nd date doesn't effect the spread of bonus, it only pushes the acceleration of a released player's bonus money to the following league year. Thus, any player cut next year on June 2nd that has bonus amortized beyond the 2006 league year will have the extra years acceleration pushed off until 2007.

Thus, June 2nd will continue to be a viable date through 2009, even if there isn't a new CBA. That is because the contracts signed prior to the end of the CBA will still have bonus accounted for through that year.

That said, there will definitely be a new CBA before the uncapped year, as it is in the best interest of both the league and the NFLPA. The owners don't want the uncertainty of no new CBA, and the NFLPA doesn't want the restrictions that occur on the market. Do you realize that in the uncapped year, unrestricted FA is pushed off until 6 years (instead of the current 4)? No player wants that.

This CBA doom-n-gloom is all chicken little stuff. It will get done, it will just be harder and take longer than normal. Once the owners get their stuff together, the union will fall in line like the always do. It is borderline criminal that Gene Upshaw gets away with being a league toadie while continuing to represent the players.

Actually, Glazer is correct.

It looks like the rule of acceleration is one of those effected by the uncapped year. Thus, teams will take the full hit even after June 1.
