With the 1st round in the books, word is starting to leak out about what has transpired inside the CRK's war room.
It seems the CRK's had been trying for well over a week to move up in the 1st round to get Demarcus Ware to play LB, but were unsucessful because they didn't want to give up the heavy asking price. The team felt they needed to address their CB situation early in the draft and decided in the end they would stay put at #11 and hope one fo their top 2 CB propects would drop to them. Sure enough, Pac Man Jones was there for the taking. Team officials could be heard openly cheering in the war room as their turn to pick arrived. They hope to groom Jones to take over for Tory James within a year or 2. James is a solid CB with great ballhawking ability (8 picks last year), but is over 30.
Content that they addressed their top need with their 1st pick, the CRK's apparently went to work on the phones to move down in the 2nd round. after some very intense negotiations with several teams they ended up sending their 9th overall 2nd round pick to the Rochester Rampage for their 15th overall 2nd and a 5th rounder. this brings the CRK's rookie picks to 10, letting them max out their rookie pool.
After this deal, we hear they were talking very seriously with the Golden Brewsters in an attempt to move up to #17. We are hearing the deal was going to invilve 2nd round picks this year and next and possibly something else..... The deal fell through when the Brewsters abruptly hung up as they got on the clock and went ahead with picking a DT.
What exactly were the CRK's targeting with that pick? Well, we don't know for sure but there have been whispers in the press area that there may have been a heated arguement between OC Don Matthews and DC Marvin Lewis. lewis was apparently pushing VERY hard for S Thomas Davis. it's not clear who Matthews was pushing for, but it may have been either a WR or QB.
What do the CRK's have in mind for round 2? Coach Parcells has said to be leaning towards the offense, but it very likely depends who the best player on the board is at the time.
stay tuned.....
