WFAN in NYC is reporting that NY State Assembly Majority Leader Sheldon Silver has announced that he will vote against state funding for the Jets' proposed stadium on the West Side of Manhattan.

According to WFAN, after Silver tried to further delay a vote on the stadium and Mayor Michael Bloomberg responded by calling for a vote today, Silver released a statement saying that he would not vote for funding the stadium "even if NYC were awarded the 2012 Olympics". Silver, who represents the Lower Manhattan district that was home to the World Trade Center, has maintained that NYC and NY State have a moral obligation to rebuild the downtown area destroyed by the attack on 9/11 before undertaking any other major building projects like the proposed West Side stadium. He had also expressed concern that the amount of taxpayer monies that would ultimately have to be spent on the project were far greater than had been revealed in the details of the proposal thus far.

This will mean that the Jets will have to explore other possibilities to get a new stadium for their team. It also is likely to mean that they will not be in a position to host the 2010 Super Bowl.

This is great news. I hate Sheldon Silver, but I'm glad he realizes that we don't want it.
