What Do You Think Of This Idea?

As one who believes that it will be very hard for the Bills to make a serious playoff run with R.Lindell as the team's PK, the following article about M.Gramatica caught my eye:

"Free agent kicker Martin Gramatica, still attempting to catch on with a team for 2005 and revive a once-promising career, has undergone surgery to repair two abdominal tears that apparently contributed to his poor performance over the past two seasons.

The surgery, performed by specialist Dr. William Meyer of Philadelphia, repaired the lower adductor and lower abdomen, both on the right side. Gramatica had 2003 hernia surgery and, until being diagnosed by Meyer, felt that problem had re-occurred.

A six-year veteran who finished the 2004 season on the Indianapolis roster, Gramatica was one of the league's top kickers for much of a nearly six-season tenure in Tampa Bay, but was released by the Bucs last December after converting only 11 of 19 field goal attempts....

...For his career, Gramatica has converted 137 of 179 field goal attempts and all but two of his 183 extra point tries, for 592 points. It is uncertain if Gramatica will have recovered from the surgery in time for training camp, but he still plans to pursue job openings in the league."
    (URL: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2096375 )

If Gramatica has recovered from his surgery in time for training camp, do you think that he would be worth bringing in to look at as a possible replacement for R.Lindell?

I don't know how long it might take for surgery such as this to heal or what impact the surgery, itself, would have on his ability to kick a football (it could be significant or it might be minimal), but I think that it would definitely be worth a shot if he has recovered by the middle of training camp. If the abdominal tears are the reason for the sudden drop-off in Gramatica's performance and the surgery corrects the problem to the point where he is able to kick like he did prior to the injury, he might be just the answer the Bills need at that position. Before the hernia and subsequent abdominal tears, Gramatica was a top-flight PK in the NFL and, if this surgery allows him to finally put those problems behind him, I would say that he would definitely be worth taking a look at. What do you think?
Those who do not learn from the past are doomed to repeat it. And, thus it was that they surrendered their freedom; not with a bang, but without even a whimper.

Here we go again. Let's bring in an injured, declining player because he was once a big name.

I can't see that replacing Lindell with Gramatica will help our playoff chances one iota. In fact, I don't think our playoff hopes hinge on a kicker at all.
Should have known, way back in 1960 when we drafted Richie Lucas Number 1, that this would be a long, hard ride. But who could have known it would be THIS bad?

Whats the difference between Gramatica and these no name kickers we have now? In the end, we only keep one of the 3 anyways.

Well, I hope our playoff hopes don't hinge on our kicker, because I would just throw in the towel if it came down to him hitting a 45 yarder to make the playoffs. Might as well just throw a hail mary, the percentage is better.

As far as Gramatica is concerned, I'd bring him to camp to see what he has in the tank.

I think most highly underestimate the importance of that position.

Bring him in!! He had an injury and that was more responsible for his play over the past 2 years than his supposed "declining skills". I thought about this a couple of months ago. Good post.

if we're truly going to play a grind-it-out style running game with McGahee, there will be a lot of close games where a kicker can make a difference. There are a lot of good teams on the schedule this year- we won't be able to play NFC West teams that can't stay within 30 points of us all season.

Hell yes bring him in. While it sounds like a pretty severe injury and the jury is out on how this will impact his game or if he will bring any game at all, we cannot sit on our laurels and just go with Lindell. How many games has this ***** cost us and yet there are some people who will say that our chances do not hinge on a kicker? No offense but I disagree completely. The Bill's would be wise to bring in every available kicker in the nation because we are in sore need of a kicker. Lindell is like the Jay Feeley of kickers. Frick'n loser.

Remember the J E T S jets, jets, jets, last year in the playoffs and actually making the playoffs was because of the same kicker who failed them when needed the most.

I was surprised when i looked at Lindells stats. He was better then i thought.
I think he is similar to Steve Christie(old christie) He lacks a strong leg for kickoffs & +50 yarders but he is servicable. I'm officialy off the Lindel hate wagon..

Perhaps. But kickers who have to kick in the elements require more skill & leg stregth. Inother words i didin't think any kickers thatw ere available or are available are worth a damn. Atleast to us anyways... Gramatica sucked his last 2 seasons in Tampa. Like Jan said" fans overlook stuff when there's a popular household name out there.... NO WAY is he a improvement. Plus he looks
