Buffalo Bills dealt for pick from Dallas and drafted J.P. Losman 22nd in 2004 first round.

His price.... a first-rounder in 2005 (DE Marcus Spears) and second- (RB Julius Jones) and fifth-round picks (TE Sean Ryan) in 2004.

Any comments?

Like most trades, it will take a few years before we really know who got the better deal.

It's not just about if JP ends up being a better player than those three combined.... It's about if Buffalo could have gotten a better QB of the future somehow. Which, again, we won't know for some time.

I agree, right now, it looks very one sided, but you never know. Julius Jones is the only one doing anything and we don't know anything about Spears yet so hard to say.

It's all a crap shoot. Sometimes you get Tom Brady. Sometimes you get Ryan Leaf.

The price was Jones and Ryan. Spears doesn't count as that pick was the one swapped.

It is really frustrating how some people look at it this way. Really in much the same way as they still call J.P. a rookie.

don't forget we got the pick early, that does count for something even tho he got hurt.

also, trades can benefit both teams. henry for a 3rd to tenn is prolly the best thing for both teams for example

Thank you. There seems to be a mental block for most folks.

I think it can not be measured by this way. First of all, I'm sure that as two different teams we have a different approach / needs, and I don't think so that we could have ended, taking the same players if we have kept those picks. You have a need, find the player you want, pay the price to get him, take your chaces. To me it is a price, not a comparison between players, if this works perfect, if not live with it.

You know what's really worth it? It's that we got Losman a year early. Otherwise we'd have to a) keep Drew one more year ( :ill: ), b) start Matt Schaub ( :ill: ), or c) throw a rookie like Jason Campbell to the wolves.

Looking at it this way, I think we did the right thing trading for JP.

And no, I don't think we would've taken another cement foot QB like Aaron Rodgers.

This is a ridiculous question to ask......JJ alone is better than that piece of trash Lossman, let alone JJ + future defensive player of the year Spears....give me a break!

and you base this is on.......the kid hasn't played yet, so far TD's moves have looked great.....If JP pans out, we'll have one of the most powerful and dynamic offenses in the league with JP, Willis, and Lee....I cant wait til JJ has his sophmore slump and/or just gets injured, between that and Bledsoe, you're in for a real dissapointment....:sorry:

You've got a big mouth boy, don't go running off when those cowboys start sucking like we told you, stick around and eat your crow boy.

If Losman pans out it's worth it. I think it's that simple really, and I don't care what Jones and Ryan do, or Marcus Spears for that matter. Buffalo needed a solid QB. They didn't have one. Dallas needs a solid QB. They don't have one. Julius Jones, Sean Ryan, and Marcus Spears are not going to do them that much good.

Don't forget we could have had Jake Grove with that #2, who is now starting for Oakland. Looking at our oline, it was not an easy call. I still like the JP trade, but the price was not cheap. However if he pans out, it was worth every penny. Franchise QBs are extremely rare and you need to grab the chance when it presents itself.

The price of Losman cannot be determined right now. He hasnt even played yet. Until he shows what he's got, this discussion is useless....btw, for a random side note, Sean Ryan went to Saint Joes here in Buffalo.....

Ya'all bills hatas are sick.......Losman is a fourth round pick at best...but leave it to that tool donahoe to waste a first round and second round pick to big D....which enabled us to draft Jones and Spears

I totally agree. I also think that this is the way that most of the GMs in the league look at things.

You can't really look at a player on another team and figure that he would necessarily perform the same way for your team as he performs for that team--a player may thrive in one system and yet not fit in the one that your team uses or vice versa.

And, the Bills didn't "lose" J.Jones, M.Spears and Ryan because, with McGahee and Henry on their roster and other needs, they certainly would not have drafted J.Jones last year (because TD would have been run out of town on a rail if he had!) and probably not Ryan (because they had already drafted T.Euhus). While we can all speculate about who they might have gotten with the picks that they traded, the fact is that they got a player, JP Losman, to fill a definite need that they feel fits their system and can do the job a year before would have if they did not make that trade. If Losman does the job, it will be a good deal for the Bills. The fact that J.Jones, M.Spears and Ryan may fill needs and do the job for Dallas is immaterial to the Bills situation--it merely means that it will be a good deal for Dallas, too.

Considering the way that Henson and Romo have performed for Dallas so far and the way that Bledsoe played for Buffalo and is likely to perform in Big D, the Cowboys may end up regretting that they did not use the pick they traded to the Bills to draft Losman themselves. They may have needed a RB last season, but could have had their QB of the future ready to start now instead. Think of it this way, looking not just at this year, but beyond, which would you rather have Bledsoe and J.Jones or JP Losman and A.Thomas/JJ Arrington? (In answering that question, take into consideration that the Bills with Bledsoe and McGahee finished 29th in red-zone offense and that 11 of Bledsoe's 28 INTs the last two years were in the red-zone.)
