The 2005 #1 overall pick Alex Smith just signed a $49.5 million contract for 6 years. How old is he? 22? Man that's a lot of money to toss a ball around. :$::$::$::$::$:

The significance of this, however, is that now everyone else can start signing and showing up to camp.

Stand back and think about that for a moment. Really think about it.

The inmates are definitely running the asylum.

This contract is a joke. A unproven rookie is making for then veterans who have proven themselves in this league. I don't know for sure but i bet you this contract blows away Jake Delhomes, Plummers of the league. All this money for a kid, who you may have to give a new contract by the time he is even worth a damn.

Looks like Miami could be in trouble here. What is the rookie cap for SF and Miami. How did this kid not take a hugh chunck of it.

Why are you guys *****ing? That's how the system works. The #1 pick gets paid, end of story. Even more if he's lucky enough to be a QB.

Look at the contracts of other #1 overall QB's in recent history. Smith's is pretty much in line. Like all the others....he is a 50/50 shot to succeed/fail.

If he succeeds, he's worth it....if he tanks....he's not.

Mike Williams got a $38 million deal and he was the 4th overall pick 3 years ago.

The guaranteed money Smith got is about the same that Eli got last season.

I believe Tom Donahoe has said that if the Bills ever got a top 5 pick again they would always try and trade it away because of the money you have to shell out in order to sign them.

Smith is guaranteed $24M, Manning $20M.

That's 1/5 more. I wouldn't call that "about the same".

I thought Manning got 22.4 or something like that. I guess I was wrong, but it's not that surprising though, it goes up every year. I don't think it really matters how much is guaranteed anyway. He and Eli are still going to see the full $40+ million that they signed for.

there's gonna be some vets complaining about this type of stuff soon...Glenn Robinson got a monster rookie deal in the NBA and Sir Charles threw a ****-fit

What do you do? Not sign him and let him walk after the season. I can understand why they shelled so much out for him.

Man that is a hell of alot of money to pay for a player who has yet to play a single down in this league. Is it just me or are these rookie contracts getting bigger and bigger every year?

I find it ridiculous that these youngsters are getting that kind of money. I mean who gives a damn how good you were in college, this isn't college pal. You haven't proved a damn thing yet. There should be some sort of rookie cap in place, a set amount of money for each position according to the round they were taken.

Well I saw on NFL Live today a comparison of the guaranteed money for the last few #1 picks.

2001 - Mike Vick $15.3 million
2002 - David Carr $11 million
2003 - Carson Palmer $16 million
2004 - Eli Manning $20 million
2005 - Alex Smith $24 million

I'm not sure why Mike Vick got so much in 2001 and then it took a dive with Carr, but you can see that it jumps pretty significantly every season.

You also havet to keep in mind that the salary cap goes up every year along with the rookie pools. I hope they work something out in the new agreement though that limits rookie contracts. It's really not fair to the vets.

Insane, the pressure Smith will be under! Personally I don't think he's going to be that good of a quaterback.

Alot of money for a guy who isn't even going to be average in the NFL. He can thank Urban Meyer for his contract.

This just puts a different perspective on college. While people think you go to college to get an education, you go to college to make your millions. Who cares if you bust after 2 yrs. in the NFL after you already made your millions during the draft.

nows where you'll see the #1 picks sign with their teams that drafted them cause they were waiting on Smith to set the pace hey Brown take all that Miami has then play crappy through your time with them

I have to disagree with this statement about a different perspective. Not too many of my fellow music majors, I included, are going to college expecting to leave as millionaires. Although I am making numerous friends and already have some great memories after one year, my main goal is to earn an education, because honestly, I could make friends, memories, and learn lessons somewhere else without having to go to class and do work.

Alex Smith graduated college in two years. I think it's fairly obvious that he went to school in order to play football AND gain an education, as well.

This right here is why the NFL will probably go to an NBA style rookie scale.
