This tells me that the Sabres did the most with what they had. These werer seasons following a Cup appearance, an OT loss short of a Conference Final, then some near misses as they tried to reload.

Compared to what they were up against- they did pretty well

People want to piss and moan about Reiger and being "stingy & stupid" not making deals.

During the Cup run and the following year, - two pretty successful playoff runs- Reiger added Gilmour ($6 million) Audette ($2 million), Chris Gratton ($2 million) Stu Barnes/Heinz ($2.6 million combined) during the trading deadlines. That's $12.6 million added for playoff pushes.

Can't really argue the success of those moves

Given resources- he's done well. Under the crooked ownership- he dealt off very expensive older Talent (Hasek, Gilmore) and unproductive expensive talent (Gratton) and built a core of solid young players- and a roster that could take a year off if a strike occured.

I agree about Reiger. I think he's always done a great job with what he had...and I've always been very pleased with how he always manages to improve the team before the trade deadline for the stretch. The problem I've had with this team is the players seem to have a problem playing for Ruff at times....especially early in the season. It would be nice for once if we weren't pathetic for the first six weeks and didn't have to dig out of a hole.

The current cap (tied to 53% of league revenue) will be set to $39,000,000

That may GO DOWN next year if the League struggles at the gate

Teams actually can hit 10% ABOVE that cap number (Around 42 million) in a short grace period from the opening of camp to opening day. When they drop the puck , all teams must be under the $39 million

Teams must pay a minimum $21 million to their rosters

Look for the top teams not to exceed $36 million or so at the strart of the season- they need extra room in case of injuries, or trades during the year
