View Full Version : I love Mularkey...and whoever else designs our offense.

It was apparent in the scrimmage that our O caters to the strengths of our players, and doesn't try to force a system down the throats of players who don't fit it. It reminded me of how much can be done now that we have a mobile QB with an arm. This is why I think JP will succeed fairly quickly.

------------------------- Now my thoughts on the scrimmage...

Some things that were highlighted during the scrimmage that will be featured parts of our offense this year:

McGahee will pound the ball a lot. And why not? He's clearly the best player on the field. That burst out of the hole for the 10-yard touchdown on Sat Night was amazing. He looked quicker than last year, and that's after packing on 10 lbs of muscle. And what a stiff arm on the run around the right side. Embarrassing.

Losman will be broken in slowly with short passes to boost his confidence, but it looked to me that the coaches have a lot of confidence in him. I remember seeing him for a few plays last year and he looked like a deer in headlights, but on Saturday, he confidently delivered the ball, took control of the huddle, etc. Losman also would have escaped a couple of those plays that were called sacks. I expect growing pains, but JP is smarter than a lot of people think. He can't be dumber than Bledsoe. Oh, and without interference on that first series (which was flagrant, but wasn't called, BTW), JP would have thrown a beatiful TD pass or at least a long-gainer.

I thought the O-line held up fairly well. They were actually better in pass blocking than run-blocking, which I didn't expect. And like I said, JP would have escaped a couple of those sacks. The run-blocking was disappointing to me though - particularly the run-blocking at the goal line. They weren't allowing GB players in the backfield for the most part, but they also weren't creating any holes whatsoever. Hopefully a few games will be all they need to become a more cohesive run-blocking line.

LITTLE Parrish will be HUGE on 3rd down.

I look forward to reverses this year, and I think we'll see them a lot where Lee Evans and Parrish cross in the backfield. The defenders will have no idea which speedster will get the ball, and both are capable of taking a reverse the distance.

It also looks like Campbell will have a big year. JP frequently looked to dump it off to big #84.

Sam Adams is gonna be a beast again this year. Every year he looks bigger than I remembered, but his play never seems to suffer. I have no doubt that even without Corey Simon, we'll be fine on the line. Imagine him alongside Simon.

McGee - wow. Player of the game. Great opening kickoff which could have gone the distance, and a huge stick on Najeh Davenport which knocked the big back from the game. Injured ankle? Puhlease. It would have just been too embarrassing to be knocked from the game by a big hit from a guy half your size.

On the pass Eric Moulds caught, I liked what I saw. In the past, he would leave his feet on most catches, which allowed him to be tackled without many YAC. But Losman hit him in the numbers, he stayed on his feet, and immediately turned it upfield for some good YAC. Good coaching.

Whether it's in Buffalo or elsewhere, Nate Clements will be the top-paid corner in the game next year.

Did I mention I LOVE watching our Defense? Sadly, Jerry Grey will be a head coach next year. And I was one of those wanting him gone when Gregg was fired. I'm glad to say I was wrong in this instance. It's amazing what good players will do for a coach.

:D

Great points, especially for us who didn't watch the scrimmage.

I agree about Gray...Actually I agree with pretty much everything.

I think Gray is 1-3 years from being a Head Coach.

A great, and positive, post. It's nice not to hear that Gandy sucked, and JP should be replaced by Holcomb, and the sky is falling, and. . .

Like I said in another post. Gray scares me near the end of the game and we have the lead. It seems he lacks the 'go for the kill' attitude needed to put this defense over the top.

Good post. I totally agree on MM, and even last year, with all the limitations of Drew, the "plays" that we ran were interesting and well designed. This year, we will get all kinds of things because of the skills of Losman. Even though by the end of the game we will see a lot of carries by Willis, this is not going to be a power running three yards and a cloud of dust offense. It will be diverse, unpredictable, innovative and exciting to watch. we will just get the ball to Willis a lot.

One note on the rest of the post, however, is that even though McGee had the nice return, and the monster hit, he was by far the worst player on the Bills in the scrimmage. He constantly got beat in coverage, and gave up most of the completions that the Packers made. He is good, IMO, and will be very good in the near future. But he was torched repeatedly in the secondary during the scrimmage.

Well he owes a lot of "I told you so" to many of the Bleadsoe backers. He was right on that ... he was so wrong on Adams though :snicker:

That is crazy, McGee is nasty and has been since he started playing in the NFL. He was one of our best players last year and will be even better this season. IMO he is just as big of a play making threat as Nate.

Great post log. I agree 100%.

Last season we were 1 mobile QB away from doing great things in the playoffs.

Just because McGee is nasty and has been good for a while and will be very good doesn't mean he didnt get torched in the scrimmage, because he did. He gave up completions on the first two Packer plays for first downs, and he gave up a couple more later, if not several more, including one of the touchdowns. Half of the completions made by the Packers in the entire scrimmage were against McGee. I love the guy and think he is going to be an excellent CB in this league for years, but he got torched in the scrimmage.

Good post log.

As far as the running game is concerned, does anyone know if Mularkey will continue to use D-linemen like Bannan on goal line and other running situations? I hope so because it was very effective for us last year in our winning streak.

I like everything except the reverse where the QB is the lead blocker. Dumbest play ever.

Great thread... great opinions here!

As for my thoughts on McGee... he scares me as a CB as much as Watson used to. Teams will inevitably pick on him because Clements is on the field. He needs to force the QBs to pick on our nickleback... not him. His problems arent that he isnt physically able to cover man to man, but his mental block is there... I think he is always looking for a huge play. After all, he is known more for his big plays, than for his steadiness (Like Nate)

nates big play mentality kinda cost us the jacksonville game last season.. that is more than i can say about mcgee.

huh?

McGee may not cost us the game on 1 play... but if his receiver goes 10 for 140 yards... how is that HELPING?

McGee got torched by Santana Moss for 156 yards or so last year. But I think he has learned alot since then. I also read an article that said that went Vincent came back, McGee's productivity went up. Whether it is b'cse Vincent is coaching him and helping him or whether it is b'cse he is better on coverage than maybe Baker was...whatever the reason, McGee has been shown to play an order of magnitude better with Vincent at FS...

so nate never got lit up by a receiver? mcgee has to be on the field to learn.. like pride said.. there is nothing physical that is keeping mcgee from being a great corner.. he has the speed.. he can hit.. he has big play ability.. so it just comes down to him getting better..

people forget he was a FS in college.

Going up against Evans in practice should help McGee in the long run. I believed that having extra responsibilities of returning kicks hurt Mcgee's ability to keep up w/ the better and faster wr's in the league. I'm hoping that someone else steps up for that job and does it as well as Mcgee does so he can concentrate on covering wr's.

According to Mikey he said it looks like Parrish is doing an awesome job on returns and more or less has the punt return duty locked up. He has not looked bad on kickoffs either. Gates has also looked good on both. I know Malarkey likes to use the best players on ST but if there is not a huge noticeable difference I wouldn't mind letting McGee just on D so we can see if it will be worth it to let Nate hit the market or not. Erick King is in the wings as well and has impressed the staff quite a bit.

I bet there'll be many times where we have two returners out there so that they can't just try and kick away from one - the other will be there to get it and make them pay. I think teams will be scared of our ST next year and play very conservative and put more air on the ball even if it doesn't go as far...just to stop the big play!

Yeah, but notice he ran ahead of everybody where there were no tacklers. Smart boy.
