The Buffalo Sabres are expecting plenty of paperwork to whiz through their offices today. The qualifying offers the team extended to its restricted free agents expire at 5 p.m., and at least seven players had yet to sign theirs as of Sunday night.

Forwards Daniel Briere, J.P. Dumont, Jochen Hecht, Maxim Afinogenov and Ales Kotalik, and defensemen Jay McKee and Henrik Tallinder remained unsigned. According to the NHL Players' Association Web site, center Tim Connolly ($1,036,900) and defenseman Jeff Jillson ($833,910) signed their qualifiers over the weekend, but the Sabres have yet to confirm that.

Did you read the article?



They still belong to the Sabres, and they now have to hammer out new deals. If they sign elsewhere, the Sabres get compensation dependant on the amount they sign for- up to 4 first round picks

They still belong to the Sabres, and they now have to hammer out new deals. If they sign elsewhere, the Sabres get compensation dependant on the amount they sign for- up to 4 first round picks

Definitely Briere and maybe Afinigenov and McKee.

I don't think any of these guys are going anywhere.


It's a gamble. Qualifying offers, depending on how much they made last year, are only going to match / give them a 10% raise. If a Briere, Afinegenov, or whatever want more, they can always decide not to sign. Or they can do what Joe Thornton did, - hold out for a longer deal. These RFA offers are good only for a season.

It would take a great set of balls to hold out after a 1 year layoff. Maybe siging a shorter contract would be the best way to handle it. These guys gotta be dying to play.
