BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) … Sabres forward Jochen Hecht agreed to a
three-year contract Monday, while leading scorer Daniel Briere
was one of 11 Buffalo players accepting one-year qualifying
offers to re-sign with the team.

Hecht's new contract is worth more than $6 million total, a
significant raise over the $1.6 million he was due next season
… his last before being eligible to become an unrestricted free
agent.

The Sabres were eager to lock up Hecht beyond next season.

"We wanted him here for longer than just that one year
because he's obviously a very important player to our team,"
Sabres general manager Darcy Regier said. "Effectively, we
bought two unrestricted years."

Briere accepted a $1.93 million qualifying offer, but he
failed to negotiate a longer-term deal, his agent, Pat Brisson,
said.

Other veteran Sabres accepting one-year qualifying offers
were forwards Maxim Afinogenov, J.P. Dumont, Tim Connolly, Ales
Kotalik, Milan Bartovic and defensemen Henrik Tallinder and
Jeff Jillson. Three Sabres prospects … forwards Jason
Pominville, Paul Gaustad and Michael Ryan … also accepted one-year offers.

LOL, still trying to make himself look good. Hecht is a nice player but by no means an above average player. Might have even overpaid a bit for a guy who never scored 20 goals and averages about 40 points a season.

I'm looking forward to seeing how much the Sabres payroll will be.

The Payroll will be around $25-28 million- just like they said it would be since the lockout ended .

Um, I never said I didn't want the other guys back, just that I would have liked to see them make at least ONE splash.

That Wys comment was a low blow though. My posts aren't near long enough. And I liked Bledsoe too.

Do YOU think Hecht is a $2 mil a year player? With all these rollbacks and all these other clubs "overspending" on superstars.

Satan 28 goals, 29 assists in 82 games.


If you project Hecht to a full season, he's got 20 goals and close to 50 assists. Satan got a total of 8 points more than Hecht in 20 more games, and he's making half of what Satan made.

Give Hecht Satan's PP minutes and extra shifts and I'll bet Hecht will be as productive for the dollar if not more than Satan was.

Hey, it's cool if some of you are happy that he resigned most of his players. I'm not, nor are many other fans. I guess we'll have to wait another year to see if it works this time.

I'll be honest with you, I didn't like Satan, but he was the best goal scorer we had and we let him walk for nothing and signed nobody to take his place. I like the fact that he signed Briere, Hecht, Afinogenov, Bartovic, Gaustad, among others, I just don't think they will get us over that hump. I'll go to a few games this year (I can't afford to go to many) but it would have been nice to see more of a commitment.

Has Satan scored 40 goals? Yes Therein lies the difference.

I like Hecht better than Satan actually. I'm just tweaking you people who are saying Darcy is doing an OK job with this. I think 2 mil. is a lot of money for a guy who never scored 20. I hope he scores 50 though.
