Cory Redding/DE/Texas

Cory Redding is 6-5, 270 pounds and runs a 4.8 40. Those numbers make NFL scouts drool. These, however, perplex his coaches at Texas: In three years, he has 13 1/2 sacks. That's respectable for most ends. It's inexcusable for Redding, who one NFL scout says could be better than Julius Peppers -- the No. 2 overall pick this spring -- if he didn't take plays off. But this could be the season Redding turns it all around. He has plenty of motivation. Not only is he playing for NFL dollars, he's playing for pride at Texas, which has a reputation of underachieving. Redding and quarterback Chris Simms are at the center of that criticism, neither having lived up to his high school hype. Redding says things will get scary this season. The question is, scary good or scary ugly?

Rod Babers/CB/Texas (http://www.nfldraftblitz.com/srcbprofiles.htm)

(5-10, 187, estimated 4.43 40 time)

2001 Season Stats: 12 games, 40 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 1 interception, 17 passes broken up, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery

Positives: Is a very good athlete, is very fluid and possesses excellent agility. Is an effective cover man. Has been a good college player throughout his career and has been even better as a senior. Very experienced, a three-year college starter.

Negatives: Lacks height and can have some problems with taller receivers. Doesn’t have great hands and will drop some easy interceptions.

Overall analysis: Entering his senior year, Babers was a solid college performer that possessed enough athletic ability to merit consideration on the second day of the draft. However, as a senior Babers appears to have taken his game to the next level. Always a solid cover man, Babers seems to be a more aggressive player and has done a better job in virtually all aspects of his game. He has enough athleticism to be a solid NFL cornerback, but his lack of top height has to be of some concern. With his solid play so far in his senior year, Babers now looks to have a pretty good chance of being a day one selection

Derrick Dockery/OG/Texas (http://www.nfldraftblitz.com/srogprofiles.htm)

(6-6, 345, estimated 5.41 40 time)

Positives: An absolute mammoth of a man. Has a big, thick lower body and excellent football build. Can simply destroy the opposition if he gets his hands on them. Possesses good quickness for his size.

Negatives: Is not as good a player as he should be. Needs to be more intense on a down to down basis. Should be a much better run blocker than he is.

Overall analysis: Dockery is an incredibly talented player who looks like a first rounder one week and a day two selection the next. Dockery moved into the starting lineup as a sophomore and has been a mainstay on Texas’ offensive line ever since. As a sophomore and junior Dockery saw extensive time at both offensive guard positions. But as a senior, Dockery moved outside and played the majority of the time at the right tackle position. As a pro, Dockery has enough size and athletic ability to play either guard spot, and could easily fill in at right tackle in a pinch. Dockery has an excellent offensive lineman’s frame, he’s a big man who has a great lower body that allows him to anchor and play with power. He is also pretty quick, and has shown above average lateral movement for an interior offensive lineman. However, despite all of his skills Dockery is not the consistent force that he should be week in and week out. Dockery may have been a first team All-American selection as a senior, but he really didn’t display the dominating type of play that NFL scouts were hoping for. Nonetheless, Dockery is still a good enough player and a talented enough individual where he figures to be a second round selection in the 2003 NFL draft.NFL Draft Blitz

Chris Simms/QB/Texas (http://www.nfldraftblitz.com/srqbprofiles.htm)

(6-5, 225, estimated 5.12 40 time)

2002 Season Stats: 12 games, 220 completions/368 attempts, 2938 passing yards, 24 passing touchdowns/11 interceptions /// 65 carries, -103 rushing yards, 4 rushing touchdowns

2001 Season Stats: 12 games, 214 completions/362 attempts, 2603 passing yards, 22 passing touchdowns/11 interceptions /// 52 carries, -10 rushing yards, 6 rushing touchdowns

Positives: Good quarterback size. Good arm and can throw with touch and velocity. Is a player that has showed improvement during his college football career.

Negatives: Inconsistent performer. Will look like a future pro-bowler one week and high school player the next. Has a history of struggling against Texas’ higher profile opponents. Has some trouble reading defenses. Doesn’t always appear to have a passion for the game of football.

Overall analysis: The son of ex-New York Giant quarterback Phil Simms, Chris Simms was considered by many to be the top high school player in the nation when he committed to Texas prior to the 1999 college season. Simms started one game as a true freshman in 1999, started about half of the team’s games during 2000, was a season-long starter in 2001 before being benched prior to the team’s bowl game and was the team’s starter throughout the 2002 season. Simms has the complete package in terms of a drop-back/pocket-passer quarterback. He has good size, a great arm, and can make the long throws and the touch throws. He also has had streaks of play in which he looks like a real special player. However, his inconsistencies are alarming. And what is even more alarming is that Simms’ history indicates that he really feasts on lesser teams and will really struggle when he goes against top competition. In fact, Simms struggled so badly in the 2001 Big 12 Championship game that he was benched during the game and served as a backup in Texas’ Holiday Bowl appearance. He was more consistent as a senior, but still played very poorly in the Oklahoma game. When you combine his good moments with his upside potential, Simms looks to be a certain day one pick. But as of now, it wouldn’t surprise me to see Simms being a high first round pick or a late second round pick. He has the potential to be a franchise quarterback, but if he doesn’t learn how to play well in the big games he will never justify a high first round selection status.

Bradie James/OLB/Louisiana State (http://www.nfldraftblitz.com/srolbprofiles.htm)

(6-3, 238, estimated 4.62 40 time)

2001 Season Stats: 12 games, 113 tackles, 8 tackles for loss, 3 sacks, 3 passes broken up, 1 fumble recovery, 1 forced fumble

Positives: Possesses very good linebacker size and speed. Is a good tackler. A versatile player that can play any linebacker position. Is a very smart individual, named to the SEC Academic Honor Role.

Negatives: Must be checked medically as he bruised a kidney in the spring. Has good size and speed, but is not superior in any area and doesn’t make many eye-popping plays on the field.

Overall analysis: As an NFL linebacker prospect, James is solid in every category. James has very good size and speed, and could likely play any of the linebacker positions in the NFL. It should be noted that James was moved to inside linebacker for his senior season. He is a very experienced player and an intelligent young man. But James isn’t a super athlete, and won’t make any “freakish” plays when on the field. As a result, James may never emerge as a pro bowl type player but he should become a very good linebacker who has the potential to be a NFL starter for many years. Right now, James looks to be the best senior outside linebacker on the board. James should figure in the late round one/early round two area once the 2003 NFL draft arrives.
