    Why does Henry Fumble?

Look at the way he is carrying the ball here.

    Good find, BFO

Well that would explain some why he fumbles so much. He's asking for it to get stripped.

Thats just not how you play football. I can't believe a NFL RB wouldn't have the football tucked in at all times. That is just pure stupidity.

I'd make him walk around with a football everyday tucked in his arm properly during every team meeting, and every time he is seen holding it the wrong way, he's gotta buy dinner for a different group of the team - one day it could be the O line, one day it could be the D line, one day it could be the specialists, one day it could be the DBs, one day the LBs until he gets it right.

I love his running style - it's like part finesse/part Bowling ball, but damn he needs to learn how to hold onto the ball the right way.

            LOL CP!

Actually, he began holding it much tighter around early mid-season. I don't know what happened in that Cincy game. Bad game to start carrying the ball sloppily. Maybe he just wasn't revved for that game which is partially understandable.

But he actually did improve and 1 or 2 of his fumbles were really good hits too.

Other than in the Denver game, his fumbles fortunately were not real game-breakers in and of themselves for the most part. I have plenty of hope that he'll work on that. He did for 7 or 8 games.

Besides, if he were barely puttin' up 1,000 yards and 6 TDs, then it would be worse. But he's a workhorse. So it's worth some patience to see if he can correct it.

            Here's a Q for us:

Suppose he doesn't correct it. Suppose he fumbles 6-8 times a season routinely resulting in 5 giveaways. What do we do?

I'd say we'd have to keep him anyway as long as he's putting up the kinds of yards he's putting up. A good rusher is gold in the NFL and helps the D out immensely.

It looked like he was holding it rather loosely when he fumbled in the Cincy game as well.

Ricky Williams had about the same number of fumbles.......I'm not worrying all that much and as you said wys, a couple were the result of hits that ANY player would have fumbled

He does carry that ball like a loaf of bread but, he is also just finnished his 2nd season in the NFL. Maybe 3rd times a charm.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, I don't repeat myself.

This is another argument for keeping Centers. Centers was the one that the coaches had work with Henry on his fumbling problem. He did improve but I think he may need a refresher course again. I can't be upset when we have a 2nd year back that ran for 1400 yards and a 4.4 ypc. That is awsome even with those fumbles!

What you do is knock him out with some gas, then put him through surgery to shorten all his fingers. Then he can palm the ball and will have to tuck it in to his arm.

Walter Payton held the ball that way as well.

I think a lot of Henry's fumbles are because he fights so hard for extra yardage. He is a guy who has to focus on ball safety, which is something he can do with work. Given his work ethic, I don't think it will be a problem.

I am a Pats fan and I'd be the first to admit that Henry is a stud. They guy runs as hard as any player in the league and makes a ton of his yardage after contact. I think the whole fumble thing is overplayed(he'll get better as he learns to focus on it more). If Buffalo is smart they will re-do his contract and sign him to an extension before he becomes a UFA, as he will only cost more to sign down the road. He is a guy you can build an offense around.

In another thread, he's quoted as saying he needs to practice on when to squeeze the ball, it's a timing thing, he said. Someone should send him that picture, I'm not sure if he realizes timing & squeezing aren't his only problems.

Timing and squeezing ~ sounds like he's trying to give birth rather then trying to hold onto the football.
