      Ditto.

        ANDY BENOIT'S TOUCHDOWN 2005
        By Andy Benoit
        Ballantine Books, $14.95

Hardcore pro football fans looking for a history lesson and a blunt assessment of the upcoming National Football League season can find it in Touchdown 2005. The book contains the opinions and analysis of 19-year-old Andy Benoit, a college freshman-to-be who spent the past offseason juggling his high school senior year duties with watching hours of NFL game tape from the 2004 season.

The editing and writing can be rough in spots, and the similes and metaphors are full of puzzling historical comparisons and others of occasional questionable taste (contrasting the Tennessee Titans' level of fresh-faced youth to that of visitors to Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch, for instance). But Benoit sizes up every team at detailed length, providing 2004 statistics and 2005 projected starting lineups. Touchdown 2005 is full of color photos and graphics, making it a visually appealing and easy-to-navigate read.

The cover promises fantasy football insight, but Touchdown 2005's analysis is more about general breakdowns of each team's positional strengths and weaknesses instead of providing lists of players and actual drafting strategies for fantasy gamers. However, the book's large volume of facts, analysis and stats can help true fantasy gamers make up their own minds.

Touchdown 2005 is too sophisticated for the casual football fan and fantasy gamers can find more precise guides elsewhere for their draft day assistance. Instead, the book is better suited to discussion among serious football fans trying to figure out why the Saints are likely to go 8-8 again. In that respect, Touchdown 2005 scores with the pro football junkie.
