A fund-raising telethon that featured more than 30 current and former NFL players raised $5 million for the Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund in about 6 1/2 hours.

Monday night's telethon was part of the NFL's "Hurricane Relief Weekend" and coincided with a special "Monday Night Football" doubleheader on ABC and ESPN. Players such as John Elway, Donovan McNabb, Art Shell and Frank Gifford took turns, 12 at a time, spending between 75 minutes to 2 hours answering telephones and taking donations.............

NFL teams and relief organizations have raised approximately $4 million from fans at stadiums for Hurricane Katrina relief, the league said, bringing the total generated by the NFL to $21 million.

I wonder if the relief efforts will be the same for Rita?

Didn't the NFLPA themselves only donate 1 million? I thought they said that on Monday night and if that's true give me a ****ing break when 1 person (Oprah Winfrey) can donate 10 Million herself then the NFL which Makes Millions a week can sure give more that 1 freaking million. I hope I'm wrong but that's what I thought I heard.

The NFLPA is not the NFL, its the players union. And Oprah Winfrey has far, far far more money than any nfl players.

Not combined.

Right. So, how do we know how much all NFL players combined to give? We don't. So saying the NFLPA should give more than 1 million is stupid. It's like saying Oprah's hairdresser should give more than 1 million, cause her employer is worth a billion (or whatever she's worth this week.)

Chris Rock said it best: Shaquille O'Neal isn't wealthy. The old white guy who signs his paycheck is wealthy. 'Go buy yourself a bouncing car. Bling bling!'

So, how much have the owners given?

I think the NFL (players and telethon included) has raised about $25 million.

I still have a hard time believing that guys like Bruce Smith showed up for free and donated their own time. Maybe if he had a sugar bowl full of coke next him...
