NFL Salaries by position- some suprises!

An old article from last offseason, but interesting anyways!
    Median salaries

Punters and kickers have the highest median NFL salaries because few teams have backups. Median salaries by position.

    Punter/Kicker $631,040
    Defensive end $600,958
    Quarterback $593,667
    Offensive line $589,133
    Cornerback $563,200
    Defensive tackle $513,880
    Linebacker $513,360
    Wide receiver $512,000
    Safety $501,580
    Running back $479,241
    Tight end $477,280

Who would have thunk that the skinny geeks on the team average the highest average salary.

Now obviously, the other positions like RB are skewed. Your average 1,000 yard rusher Like LaDamien Tomlinson make 8 million, but the 2-3 guys behind him all make peanuts.

The showy positions, WR, QB, DB et al, have a lot of flair when on the field, but football is won or lost with the kicker. Moorman saved our butts several times this season.

Look at what happened this weekend too. Without a good kicker, you aren't going far these days.

Actually the data cites median salaries not mean salaries so your assertion kickers have the highest average salaries is incorrect. The median is the observation that falls in the center of all observations. Since kickers are usually alone on a roster their salary is the median salary for kickers. In the case of QB's there are usually three on the roster which would mean the back-up QB would be the median salary for QBs on that team. Hence the data is saying the kicker is making more than the 2nd QB, 3rd WR..etc. It's quite useless.

The data also shows that, four out five posters in this thread are confused.

When looking at statistics...median means nothing...it is only the middle of the numbers....for example:

5 WR play for the Buffalo Bills. Their salaries are:

                1,000,000
                1,000,000
                1,000,000
                500,000
                500,000

the median is 1,000,000....it doesn't really tell you what the players are actually making.

the average (mean) is 800,000....it is more reflective of what they make.

                quiet a differece.

Kickers are the ones who spend more time playing golf too. For what they are being paid, they should tackle better.

$631,000? Geez, I'm raising my son to be a panzy.

The reason Kicker/Punter median salary is so high because teams usually only have 1 of each. Theres not many of them.

There's somewhere between 75 kicker/punters in the NFL. Most teams have around 7-8 offensive lineman, that would make around 256 o-linemen in the league for example.

                      3 QB per team= 96
                      6 or 7 CB= 224

You never here of a kicker signing a 5 year 25 million dollar contract.

I think Janikowski is the highest paid at 1.5- 2 million per year

Not sure but the holder for the Giants (Allen) should give back his salary after his bonehead play of not spiking it when Junkin snapped the ball badly on 3rd down and 6 seconds left...

                              Here's something interesting-

The Giants game is often compared to the Bills Oilers comeback. It was in that game as well that a punter Greg Montgomery (who was the holder on the play) botched the attempt when the snap went through his hands.

If the Oilers make that kick, the Bills probably lose the game.

For the life of me, why do they not get a backup QB to hold on kicks? They are supposed to have good hands and some judgement under fire of a rush. Punters do not.
