Ah yes, we are based partially on our strong postseason finish last year. That, coupled with our strong start this year explains things very clearly.........ah- it says the rankings aren't based entirely on this year's stats- that would explain why we're ranked so high.

It's actually a pretty interesting ranking system, if you read the details. At the moment, 2004 performance and their preseason outlook factor into the rankings, but that will fade out by week 8.
There's also a '2005 only' column that only uses this year's games - Buffalo 15th (Miami 8th, Patriots 14th, Jets 24th) - although since the rankings are based on a formula rather than subjective judgments, that too can be a little skewed early. (No, Miami doesn't deserve to be ranked above the Pats.)
