View Full Version : Forget about JP for a second- the real problem is the O LINE.

JP is young and has only played 4 games. Several posters have beaten into our heads that some great QB's (such as Manning) were just as bad for their first few games. Who cares about that right now? I was hoping to see this team WIN and the fact of the matter is that the tools just aren't there. The offense was no better when Holcomb came in, which to me suggests that our struggles have to do with a LOT more than just JP.

The way I see it, we're not going to win with or without JP and here's why:
-The play calling has been horrendous. It seems like Mularkey and Clements are STILL learning on-the-job 20 games into their careers
-The O line can't pass block. Holcomb is more experienced and may be able to throw the deep ball better, but it's not going to matter if there's a linebacker in his face after 0.6 seconds.
- Our D can't create turnovers or stop teams on third down (especially late in games when the offense hasn't been able to keep our D off the field).

A lot of these problems start with the O line. They're very good as run blockers (except on 4th and 1), but horrendous at pass blocking. This puts additional pressure on JP and makes his job more difficult. Of course this results in 3 and outs and puts the D back on the field, where they very quickly get tired due to losing the TOP battle.

Donahoe has neglected this O-line for years, and it's putting more strain on this team than it can handle. There's really nothing that can be done to fix this at this point in the season, other than hope McNally can teach these guys how to block. But even a master chef can't make a decent meal with sub-par ingredients. TD and Mularkey are asking McNally to make 14-layer lasagna with a can of Spaghetti-O's and a package of string cheese.

The play calling is something that can be changed immediately. RUN the ball, RUN the ball, RUN the ball. Willis McGahee has been the only productive offensive player on the team this year (and Rosenass will make us pay him for it in the off-season). Successful football teams have the ability to run even when the opponents KNOW they're going to run, and right now that's the Bills' only chance to win.

well,

williams is hurt and that is hurting us (trouble running right and sacks and pressures are way up since he got hurt).

we need a new RG and C, but our line is good at run blocking.

the thing is, we don't have anyone who is an upgrade to plug in there, and losman is getting pressured but he is just horrible in first downs with no pressure too. we do have someone to replace the QB, so we play the cards we have.

You are 1/2 right. JP is not all to blame, b/c our pass protection is simply shi**y. BIG TIME!!! But it doesn't change the fact that JP cannot hit the broad side of a barn w/ his throws. You can see the frustration on Moulds, Evans, and everyone, its just damn ridiculous. His happy feet in the pocket has created him over/under throwing everyone of his balls. At least when Holcomb came in he looked comfortable in the pocket. JP is still developing, and thats really the only thing that is good about him so far.

I can agree with most of what you're saying.

I also think that they should use more designed running plays for Losman. Let the kid use his legs otherwise use Holcomb. JP is just not built as an in the pocket QB. In the same breath, JP has to get better in the passing game. There will be games when running the ball just simply doesn't get it done. If he is going to be this franchise's future, he has to get the ball to the receiver. I know that he is young, and that's just fine. But get someone to work on his mechanics. They haven't gotten any better through 4 games. Sam Wyche must be sitting around with his thumb up his ass.

13 OL drafted by the Bills in 11 years...3 never played a down in the NFL...little wonder.

How about the two balls that Moulds dropped today? Some posters would still think that was JP's fault as well.

Yeah. Greg Jerman started again. Not someone you feel comfortable with in pass protection. :crap:

Bingo, it starts up front and today showed how much it didn't get done up front.

It starts and ends with Line play on both sides of the ball. In addition, its poor 3rd down performance on both sides of the ball. If we can protect our QB and rush theirs and not give up God knows how many 3rd and whatevers... we WILL win some games!!!

It's not all JP's fault!

so much for mcnally being a "great" oline coach.. the excuse that he is working with subpar players can be used, but he is part of the team that picked the guys we have.. if he felt we needed more, he should have made it happen.. but he didnt.. this oline looks alot like the giants oline at the end of his stint there.
