JP is young and has only played 4 games. Several posters have beaten into our heads that some great QB's (such as Manning) were just as bad for their first few games. Who cares about that right now? I was hoping to see this team WIN and the fact of the matter is that the tools just aren't there. The offense was no better when Holcomb came in, which to me suggests that our struggles have to do with a LOT more than just JP.
The way I see it, we're not going to win with or without JP and here's why:
-The play calling has been horrendous. It seems like Mularkey and Clements are STILL learning on-the-job 20 games into their careers
-The O line can't pass block. Holcomb is more experienced and may be able to throw the deep ball better, but it's not going to matter if there's a linebacker in his face after 0.6 seconds.
- Our D can't create turnovers or stop teams on third down (especially late in games when the offense hasn't been able to keep our D off the field).
A lot of these problems start with the O line. They're very good as run blockers (except on 4th and 1), but horrendous at pass blocking. This puts additional pressure on JP and makes his job more difficult. Of course this results in 3 and outs and puts the D back on the field, where they very quickly get tired due to losing the TOP battle.
Donahoe has neglected this O-line for years, and it's putting more strain on this team than it can handle. There's really nothing that can be done to fix this at this point in the season, other than hope McNally can teach these guys how to block. But even a master chef can't make a decent meal with sub-par ingredients. TD and Mularkey are asking McNally to make 14-layer lasagna with a can of Spaghetti-O's and a package of string cheese.
The play calling is something that can be changed immediately. RUN the ball, RUN the ball, RUN the ball. Willis McGahee has been the only productive offensive player on the team this year (and Rosenass will make us pay him for it in the off-season). Successful football teams have the ability to run even when the opponents KNOW they're going to run, and right now that's the Bills' only chance to win.
