Sabres' Varada out with sprained knee

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) -- Sabres forward Vaclav Varada will miss up to four weeks with a sprained right knee, further depleting Buffalo's lineup.

Varada was hurt in the second period of Tuesday's 3-2 loss at Philadelphia when he was checked into the boards by Jeremy Roenick. Varada, considered one of the Sabres' top checking forwards, has five goals and nine points in 40 games this season.

To replace Varada, the Sabres called up right wing Jaroslav Kristek from Rochester of the AHL.

Penguins' Lemieux to miss one game, but Hedberg out indefinitely

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Pittsburgh Penguins star Mario Lemieux will miss a game with an injury for the first time this season when he sits out Thursday's contest against Toronto because of a sore groin.

The way the Penguins are going injury-wise, it's almost good news.

They also learned Wednesday that No. 1 goaltender Johan Hedberg will be out indefinitely with a broken collarbone, an injury that could sideline him for several weeks or longer.

Lemieux, the NHL's top scorer with 68 points in 40 games, was injured during the second period of Tuesday's 6-3 loss to the New York Islanders. He tried to return for a shift after getting hurt, only to come back to the bench immediately after losing a faceoff.
