I'm gonna need some help...

My choices - *

General Managers:
*Scott Pioli -- Vice President of Player Personnel, New England Patriots
*Tom Heckert -- Vice President of Player Personnel, Philadelphia Eagles
Jim Lippincott -- Director of Football Operations, Cincinnati Bengals
Jerry Reese -- Director of Player Personnel, New York Giants

Coaches:
*Brad Childress -- offensive coordinator, Philadelphia Eagles
Jim Johnson -- defensive coordinator, Philadelphia Eagles
*Monte Kiffin -- defensive coordinator, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Larry Coker -- head coach, University of Miami Hurricanes
Bob Stoops -- head coach, University of Oklahoma Sooners
Frank Beamer -- head coach, Virginia Tech University Hokies

Tom Heckert or Scott Pioli with Brad Childress as head coach and Jerry Gray as defensive coordinator sounds pretty good to me. I think we might be on the right track.

An idea of who some of the best coordinators are so far...

Jim Fassel for head coach? He'll probably be looking again.

When Leslie Nielsen gets the axe, do you think Mike Mularkey will still be here? The only reason he got hired is because he's Tom Donahoe's boy. A new guy with his own mind won't care who he is...

childress has owens and westbrook and mcnabb.. a top wr/rb/qb combo.. so i would expect him to put up good numbers.. i am not saying he is a bad coach or anything, but i also am not overly impressed.

the one i really dont get is the bengals vp.. the bengals havent done squat.. it has been longer for them to make the playoffs than it has been for us.. why would we want anyone from there? so we can go 9-7 and keep being a middle of the pack team?

Beamer will not be leaving VT, although the same was said about Saban and LSU (especially after his 10 year deal with them).

As far as GM, Pioli aint leaving the pats youd have better luck winning the "Superbowel" with this years Bills.

Heckertt would make an ACE gm.

Regarding Childress... he has been there the whole time. The Eagles have been good for years, before Westbrook and Owens. It's not like this guy has popped up since they signed T.O. He has been doing it for years with no RB's and no WR's, and they STILL win their division every year and have gone to four straight NFC championship games, and 5 straight playoffs. Of course he's just part of the whole picture, but those are pretty good credentials in my book. AND, he has helped groom from scratch one of the NFL's best QB's. Wouldn't that be a good benchmark for hiring somebody with young Losman on our team?

Regarding the Bengals' guy... yeah, it's still early. However, if they indeed continue down this path, he would have brought in a new head coach (a good one), staff, and drafted well (awesome QB!), had two straight 8-8 years, then a playoff year. Not bad for rebuilding. A lot better than Tom Donahoe! Sure, he may be an outside chance guy, but could he be worse than missing the playoffs for five straight years? I'd still rather have Heckert, or Pioli (although that might be tough to pry him away).

I generally agree here. However, Weis and Crennel both left. Belichick has a lot of player personnel power, it's not out of the realm of possibilities that Pioli would want to blaze his own path. I agree it would be tough though.

The most logical to me would be Heckert as GM, Childress as HC, and retain Jerry Gray as defensive coordinator. I would be pretty darn happy with that.

Good choices. The hard part is picking a GM/coach combo since we have no idea who the GM would pick. It goes beyond the information we have access to, i.e., the friendships, connections, politics, etc.

Mudflap1
10-07-2005, 01:28 PM
Agreed, that's why the Heckert/Childress combo appears to make sense on paper. Good drafting, player development, smart signings, good management of the cap, and most importantly, perennial contender!

My only reservation with Childress is that most championship head coaches are from the defensive side of the ball. In fact, I would wager that most successful coaches (not necessarily SB winners, but guys who have consistently gotten their teams deep into the playoffs) have come from the defensive side.

Granted there are plenty of exceptions, e.g., Man Boobs was terrible as an HC, but if someone were to post the stats, I bet it is like 75%/25% (def/off) as to the composition of successful head coaches.

Do any of these guys have NFL head coaching experience? If not, we'd be back in the same boat just a different captain. Besides, Pioli (sp) will probably never leave N.E. Seattle offered a crap ton of money and he took less to stay put.
In addition, a new coach and GM mean new players and a new system for the old guys to adjust too. As we've seen in the past, adding a few players here and there is good, and subtracting a few here and there is fine. A whole new sceme means another sans playoffs. :horror:

Let's take a look at the Super Bowl coaches of the last 10 years or so:

Bill Belichick -- defensive guy (three times)
Andy Reid -- offensive guy
John Fox -- defensive guy
Jon Gruden -- offensive guy
Bill Callahan -- offensive guy
Mike Martz -- offensive guy
Jim Fassel -- offensive guy
Brian Billick -- offensive guy
Dick Vermeil -- offensive guy
Jeff Fisher -- offensive guy
Mike Shanahan -- offensive guy (two times)
Dan Reeves -- offensive guy (four times)
Mike Holmgren -- offensive guy (two times)
Bill Parcells -- offensive guy (three times)
Bill Cowher -- special teams guy
Barry Switzer -- offensive guy

Lot of offensive guys in that list.

That's BS. We took two unproven guys who were cheap hires and Tom Donahoe lap dogs. If we get a REAL GM, he would theoretically hire a REAL head coach, no matter the cost or the power role. If he is the right guy and a true star in the making, that's the guy we should go for.
