BOSTON (AP) -- Boston Bruins center Joe Thornton has an infected left elbow and will miss Friday's game against the Buffalo Sabres.

Thornton, the NHL's third-leading scorer, entered a hospital Thursday to receive intravenous antibiotics. He was expected to be released Friday.

Thornton missed the Bruins' 5-2 loss at Toronto on Tuesday.

"He was examined by Dr. Bertram Zarins and Dr. Zarins determined that this was the best course of treatment," Bruins general manager Mike O'Connell said. "His status for Saturday's game will depend on how the infection responds to the antibiotics."

How do you get an elbow infection?

I hope I don't get a wrist infection....
