I certainly hope that Mr. Donahoe is not resting on his laurels. Bills are in a great position to steal the division THIS YEAR. This team needs a few reinforcements on both lines, but I also believe the Bills could use veteran depth in the secondary and at RB. I would like to see a battle tested vet behind McGahee to help with a playoff run. Unfortunately, the Bills likely only have enough cap space for 1 addition. I believe the most "desperate" need is help at DT to stop the run. I will briefly outline my needs:
1) DT: The run D is below average. Far too many 20+ gains. The best teams in the league will run over us in the playoffs, if we make it. There's not much available. Most teams are still in the hunt, but a team like the Texans who are likely to be rebuilding with a new coaching staff in '06 has a veteran DT I like. His name is Seth Payne. He plays predominantly NT, but I believe he could give us the help we need inside. His 2005 salary is $1 million but the Bills would be on the hook for only $647,059. He is signed thru 2008, but he would likely be asked to re-work his 2006 salary of $2.8 million. NOTE: If the Bills weren't playing the Raiders this week OR if the trading deadline was next Tuesday, I would consider Ted Washington for the rest of 2005.
2) 3rd CB: I'm sick and tired of our D giving up 1st downs on 3rd and longs. Eric King may develop into a solid #3 CB, but he's a rookie and at times, he gets burned on 3rd down. The sad part is that he's apparently ahead of Jabari Greer on the depth chart. Texans offer up another possibility in DB Marcus Coleman. He can play both CB and FS. He offers a dimension that the Bills do not have, a tall, physical DB who can win match ups in the red zone. His salaries are palatable. His prorated 2005 salary would be $1,002,941. His salary for 2006 is $1.785 million and for 2007 it's $2.1 million. Lenny Walls with the Broncos is a possibility as well. He's scheduled to be UFA after 2005. Broncos tendered him at the mid-level 1st rd tender of $1.43 million, but he's presently listed as #4 on their depth chart. He could offer the same as Coleman but with more speed and long-term upside. Prorated 2005 salary is $925,294. Rumor on PFT has Antoine Winfield available. His 2005 salary is very cheap but his 2006-2009 salaries are all over $4 million. I would doubt he's really available.
3) OL: Bills really need some veteran depth on the OL, especially OT. Unfortunately, so does nearly every team in the league. Not likely that anyone becomes available at a price the Bills are willing to pay
4) RB: As I stated, I would like to see a veteran behind McGahee for the stretch run. Look at the Steelers depth, they are constructed as a playoff team. I do not have any names because this is likely a luxury we cannot afford.
