Insurance Play Writing on the wall for Harrington

Jeff Garcia (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/4924/) #5 (QB) Detroit Lions (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/det/) Joey Harrington (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/5889/)'s QB rating (55.6) is worst among NFL starters. It's so bad, in fact, that even J.P. Losman (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/6781/) had a better QB rating (55.9) before getting benched in Buffalo. Harrington is likely to suffer a similar fate as Losman. Garcia is back in practice after breaking his leg in the preseason, and he's splitting reps with Harrington. Whether Garcia starts or not on Sunday likely depends on Garcia's ability to move around on his leg. If he doesn't feel comfortable on it, Harrington will be granted a stay of execution. Detroit plays some defenses down the stretch that have been very kind to fantasy QBs – Minnesota (twice), Green Bay and Atlanta. If Garcia takes over and has a full contingent to work with – Roy Williams (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/5894/) gets healthy, Charles Rogers returns from suspension – he'll be worth having around as insurance.

Tell me about it. Everybody was talking how special this kid was going to be. I'll admit I bought into the hype when he came out of college too. :shakeno:

Welcome back to the same old discussion we have every time a promising QB "fails."

Did anyone see the clips of Harrington on NFL Live the other day? He was getting sacked before he completed THREE STEP DROPS!!! That's bad, folks. Really bad. The team also has trouble finding their running game, despite having a solid back in Kevin Jones.

Sound familiar? It should. It also happened to some of our previous QB's. One of them is doing quite well in Dallas, I hear. Interesting that Dallas has a proven coach and a solid offensive line . . .

Think it's coincidence that these QB's that "fail" are getting the snot beaten out of them every game? I don't. I think Garcia will do marginally better than Harrington because he has better scrambling ability . . . but the problem is in the offensive line. Call it a diluted player pool, lack of talented linemen, or inept coaching, but teams' problems don't start and end with the QB. Harrington showed steady improvement over the past two years; he's just the latest victim of misplaced fan and media pressure to mature into a star quickly and despite any obstacles. Sure, he could be better. But he could also be less banged-up, less rattled, less fearing for his life. He could have time to look downfield before throwing the ball.

The lions need a new OL, not a new QB. Unfortunately for Harrington (or perhaps fortunately, if he finds work elsewhere), they have only the latter.

I'll take this one step further with a prediction: the next "promising" QB to lose his job thanks to abysmal linemen will be David Carr. It might not be this season, but I think it's inevitable. I just hope he comes out of that torture chamber alive.
