I've been asked to outline Moulds' cap situation after this season

After '05 season, Moulds will have 2 yrs remaining. He signed a 1 yr extension in Feb '05 that helped the Bills save a bit over $3.4 million on the '05 cap. His remaining 2 yrs look as follows:

EDIT 12/8/05: Due to the presence of an "uncapped" year in 2007, some previous cap rules no longer apply. For example, releasing a player after June 1st will no longer split remaining amortization into 2 cap years....all remaining amortization will automatically accelerate onto 2006 cap

2006

Salary: $6.089 million
Old proration: $2 million (from $12 million s.b. he rec'd in 2001)
New Proration: $1,666,667
Reporting bonus: $1 million (likely due at start of training camp)
Work out bonus: $100,000
Pro Bowl bonus: $200,000 (NLTBE)

Cap hit: $10,855,667

2007

Salary: $7.25 million
New proration: $1,666,667

Cap hit: $8,916,667

Scenario 1: Released or trade before reporting bonus due

I believe the reporting bonus is due at the start of training camp. However, I doubt the Bills will wait to decide on whether Moulds stays or goes. They would have to carry his large cap number all off-season. If the Bills do not work out a restructuring (i.e. paycut), then it's likely that he's gone before the 2006 League Yr begins in March '06.

Cap savings = 2006 cap hit - remaining proration

$5,522,333 = $10,855,667 - $5,333,334

Scenario 2: Released or traded after paying reporting bonus

It's possible the Bills hang on to Moulds. It depends on what happens during the rest of this season. If Evans/Parrish were to suffer a serious injury (knock on wood he doesn't  ), that along with the fact that Josh Reed is UFA and Sam Aiken is RFA could force the Bills to retain him and in fact likely force a restructuring long before training camp. That being said, this scenario results:

Cap savings = 2006 cap hit - (remaining proration + reporting bonus)

$4,522,333 = $10,855,667 - ($5,333,334 + $1,000,000)

Conclusion (updated 12/8/05): With recent events, Moulds will likely be released before start of 2006 League Year :(

Good work Clump...I think everyone knows he is gone next year including Eric. I think that is why Eric has been vocal in wanting Holcomb in there at QB.
Just like the respect they gave Bledsoe the Bills will cut him early so he can get the most money.

This probably means a 1st round WR draft unless we have some good, cheap FA's in the pool next year...

OMG. If TD doesn't draft for the OL or DT, he'll get the tar and feather treatment.

Vet UFA WR's are a dime a dozen every spring.

Yeah, except that we want a good WR and not just a body...I think Evans will struggle alot more when teams double team him with Moulds gone. I don't know, maybe Parrish can alleviate some of that...But I would love to be able to get a Martin Nance...

I don't want an OL in the 1st round. I don't want to pay MW type dollars for a position that usually commands half that amount. I rather get one in the 2nd or even 3rd since the draft is full of OTs - although we appear to need OG's also...Right now I like Marcus McNeil 6'9", 337 or Jeremy Trueblood 6'9" 330. One of these OTs should be available in the 2nd round, but I really think we could wait until the 3rd round and still get a good prospect. I trust McNally to pick a good prospect. After all, he seemed to pick a good one in Duke Preston. For Guards, there is less talent available, and we may need to take a Guard in the 2nd rd instead and take an OT later.

DT we do need, but we need someone massive that can clog the middle alongside Sam Adams...someone like Haloti Ngata - 6'5", 338 lbs. But he's likely to be the 1st DT chosen and depending on where we are on the list, we may not get him...so another one might be...Gabe Watson - 6'4", 320 lbs.

moulds could always restructure. however, i think he, LIKE MOST OF US, are sick of the perpetual mediocrity that plaques this organization.

I think Moulds is gone as well. He's not worth the cap hit, and if he's gonna take a pay cut he'll want to go to a contender.

As for the draft pick, we should be between 10-18 and should look to trade down. There is always some middle of the pack team that thinks they are one player away and will overspend for someone in that range. Try to load up on 2nd and early 3rd round picks. Bring in a bunch of O-line prospects and maybe a couple WR's. Then maybe we'll have "a future".

I'm not sure we should trade down. Given that Sam Adams is getting older, and our current D-line stinks, we probably need a DT more than anything right now. If we want a top DT who is big and can run stuff - like Jerry Gray likes to have in the middle, we may want:

Haloti Ngata - 6'5", 338 lbs. Make no mistake about it, this guy is a physical freak and his potential is through the roof.

Depending on how well he does in college this year, his stock may go up and could even be taken in the top 10...what's the likelihood we will draft him? Well...he did have a knee injury in '03. :D:

Can we fire the coaching staff. I don't want a big ass run stopper. I want some crazy #$%&#'s who want to kill QB's like Dallas got. Moulds would be stupid not to restructure and stay. Even with a restructred deal he is going to make way more that going into free angency. His receiving numbers blow.

Look what happened to Andre Reed. We are way too myopic here. From the outside Moulds does not look that good.

If we play the rest of the season like we played last week, we will be in good draft position.

Clump. A few more questions. Let's figure a Scenario 3: Eric Moulds traded to Philadelphia Eagles for Terrel Owens. Does it makes sense? Is it a win-win situation? Who eats the bonuses for both players?

Terrell Owens has five seasons remaining on the seven-year, $48.97 million contract he signed in March 2004. If a team trades for Owens, it would assume the contract he negotiated.
Owens is due a base salary of $770,000 next season, and was set to earn $5.5 million in 2007, $6.5 million in 2008, $7.5 million in 2009, and $8.5 million in 2010.

Depends on when the bonuses are due. if you trade for a player before the bonus is due, the acquiring team pays the bonus

Thanks Clump!

According to this facts; the following is the Owens-Moulds financial reality if both teams are interested:

Philadelphia:
1. $5 million roster bonus + $770,000 base salary this year if Owens continue in Philadelphia.
2. $5 million death cap hit if Owens is released now.
3. Almost $11 million of cap hit if they get Moulds via trade without Owens issues.
Summary: $6 million cap hit for Moulds services if Philly consider Owens death cap hit.
http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=eaglesowens&prov=st&type=lgns

Buffalo:
1. $5 million roster bonus + $6.089 million base salary + $1 million reporting bonus if Moulds doesn't restructure.
2. $5.5 million death cap hit if Moulds is released now.
3. Almost $6 million of cap hit if Bills get Owens via trade without Moulds issues.
Summary: $0.5 million cap hit for Owens' services if Bills consider Moulds death cap hit.

In other words, a no brainer for the Bills but not viable for the Eagles.
