View Full Version : What do we have to do?

What do we have to do to get free agents to come here, and stay here at reasonable salaries. Guys take paycuts to play for NE, and want to go there, what can we do to make it happen here?

I realize winning is a big part of it, but with our late season surge last year, why didn't Jonas and Pat offer to stay at reduced rates to allow the team to get additional free agents help like NE players do?

Is Buffalo that bad a place to play that everyone just wants out?

well there are a lot of factors working against us that are virtually impossible to change, starting with bad weather and lack of national exposure (no Monday night games, few if any national Sunday games- these guys have egos).

Of course, some of the advantages of Buffalo are low property costs, no traffic and a great practice facility. The thing is that Buffalo lacks a system that attracts quality players. If you're an RB or OL, you KNOW Denver and Pitt run the ball. If you're a QB or WR, you look for a West Coast system, if you're a TE you look for teams with scrambling QB's like Vick or Brooks- what is it about Buffalo's system that attracts any players? Or, more importantly, does Buffalo even HAVE a system?

The only thing that's gonna get people here is WINS.

We did at one point. Adams, Spikes, Milloy, Fletcher. Most players want to play for a team on the way up. Not a team that is up, down, up down.

Win the big one 3 out of 4 years and guys will do that. For some of the people around here, a big acheivement for them is finishing at .500 and hoping to slip into the playoffs for a game.

When you're always playing for "next year" and the "future" few free agents will want to come here unless you give them top dollar.

Why would Nate Clements want to stay in Buffalo other then being paid Top Dollar?

Or when you haven't made the playoffs in 6 years and on the road for another bad season.

The way I see it the Bills will never be a good team again until they start building thru the draft. And when your 2005 draft looks like this ....

2 23(55) Roscoe Parrish WR Miami (FL)
3 22(86) Kevin Everett TE Miami (FL)
4 21(122) Duke Preston C Illinois
5 20(156) Eric King CB Wake Forest
6 23(197) Justin Geisinger OG Vanderbilt
7 22(236) Lionel Gates HB Louisville

its going to be along time.

Or the 2004 Draft...

1 13(13) Lee Evans WR Wisconsin
1 22(22) J.P. Losman QB Tulane
3 11(74) Tim Anderson DT Ohio St.
4 13(109) Tim Euhus TE Oregon St.
7 6(207) Dylan McFarland OT Montana
7 13(214) Jonathan Smith WR Georgia Tech

Or 2003

1 23 23 RB Willis McGahee Miami
2 16 48 DE Chris Kelsay Nebraska
3 30 94 LB Angelo Crowell Virginia
4 14 111 DB Terrence McGee Northwestern State
4 30 127* WR Sam Aiken North Carolina
5 16 151 OG Ben Sobieski Iowa
6 14 187 DT Lauvele Sape Utah
7 14 228 MLB Mario Haggan Mississippi State

3 drafts...3 good players (McGahee ,Evans, McGee)

All the rest are scrubs.

Tom Donahoe must go.

Or 2002 Draft

1 4 Mike Williams OT Texas
2 36 Josh Reed WR LSU
2 61 Ryan Denney DE Brigham Young
3 97 Coy Wire S Stanford
5 139 Justin Bannan DT Colorado
6 176 Kevin Thomas CB UNLV
7 215 Mike Pucillo OG Auburn
7 250 Rodney Wright WR Fresno St.
7 252 Jarrett Ferguson FB Virginia Tech
7 260 Dominique Stevenson OLB Tennessee

Tom Donahoe needs to go.

4 years, 4 horrible Drafts.

4 Drafts, 1 pro-bowl player (McGee), and that was for special teams.

That reminds of that draft when we took Williams. There was Shockey, Harrington, Carr, and Julius Peppers. What an up and down draft for talent that turned out to be. I'd take Peppers right now over Spikes.

A coach that knows how to win with the players he's got whether rookies, back-ups or vets. Right now all we have is an OC that is prettending to be a HC because the GM is the one really running things.
