MAN VS. BEAST AIRS WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 15 9PM/8C FOX

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Tuesday, January 7, 2003

WHO CAN PULL A DC-10 AIRPLANE FASTER -- A TEAM OF LITTLE PEOPLE OR AN ELEPHANT?
FIND OUT WHEN FOX AIRS 'MAN VS. BEAST' WEDNESDAY, JAN. 15

Carl Lewis and Michael Buffer to Serve as Commentators

Man meets his ultimate competitor in the all-new one-hour special MAN VS. BEAST airing Wednesday, Jan. 15 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. Human participants go head to head against beasts in a series of competitions testing a variety of disciplines. Steve Santagati ("Looking For Love: Bachelorettes In Alaska") will serve as host.

A contest of brute strength takes us to the Mojave Desert where 44 little people compete against an 8800-pound elephant in a foot race to see who can pull a DC-10 airplane a distance of 75 feet in the shortest amount of time.

During another face off, world-class sprinter Shawn Crawford will race against a giraffe and a zebra in separate 100-meter races. Find out if this international track star from the United States has what it takes to win when they bolt from behind the gates of a professional horseracing track. Nine-time Olympic gold medal champion Carl Lewis is trackside for this event.

Next, 132-pound Takeru Kobayashi, the world-record holder in hot dog eating (50 hot dogs in 12 minutes), enters the ring to try and out-eat a 1000-pound Kodiak bear. Boxing announcer Michael Buffer serves as ringside commentator.

In another event of physical endurance, representatives from the Army, Air Force, Marines and Navy compete against each other on a large military-style obstacle course. The winner will then compete against a chimpanzee in the same event to determine who is the best, man or beast.

Eric Schotz and Bill Paolantonio are executive producers for MAN VS. BEAST, which is being produced by LMNO Productions.

TAKERU KOBAYASHI/Nathans Hot Dog Champion (http://www.who2.com/takerukobayashi.html)

Vitals- 5-7 130 lbs

runs a 5.65 / 40 time, but a 12.45 /40 when eating 30 hot dogs

On July 4th of 2001, Kobayashi ate 50 hot dogs in 12 minutes during the Nathan's frankfurter eating contest at Coney Island, New York. It was his first attempt at the annual competition. Kobayashi shattered the existing record of 25 hot dogs, which had been set the previous year by his countryman Kazutoyo Arai. Kobayashi, 5'7" and 131 pounds, gained eight pounds in the 12 minutes of the competition. In February of 2002 Kobayashi was at it again, winning a made-for-TV eating competition called Glutton Bowl #1 on Fox TV. In July of 2002 Kobayashi returned to Coney Island and defended his title by eating 50 and one-half hot dogs in 12 minutes.

Accusations hurled at hot dog contest
By Darren Rovell

http://sportsmed.starwave.com/media/other/2002/0704/photo/hotdog_i.jpg

NEW YORK -- On Thursday, competitive eating made a lot of progress in proving that it is indeed a sport. Like the NFL, NHL and NBA, it apparently needs instant replay.

Takeru Kobayashi, center, won the title with 50½ hot dogs, while Eric Booker, right, finished second with 26.
Japanese professional speed-eater Takeru "The Tsunami" Kobayashi destroyed the competition for the second consecutive year at the Nathan's Famous Fourth of July international hot dog eating contest, scarfing down 50½ hot dogs and buns in 12 minutes.

The 24-year-old Kobayashi, who weighed 113 pounds before the contest and almost 120 pounds after, bettered his 2001 world-record performance by half a hot dog despite having to fight off the 100-degree heat. He also covered the spread of Internet gamblers, who favored him to win by 20 hot dogs.

But in the final seconds, with many of the 20 competitors already satisfied with their effort, Kobayashi's body heaved as his cheeks ballooned with remnants. Since visible regurgitation during competition means a disqualification, many in the crowd cried foul and waited for the title to be given to Eric "Badlands" Booker, who finished second with 26 hot dogs.

Seconds after the contestants were told to put down their hot dogs, Kobayashi's individual judge, Gersh ****zman of the New York Post, and Mike Devito, the commissioner of the International Federation of Competitive Eating (which sanctioned the contest), ruled that the victory was official.

"It's the Raiders-Patriots game all over again," joked Rich Shea, president of the IFOCE.

But instant replay would not overturn the fumble, as it did during the AFC divisional playoffs.

Competitive eating a man-eat-dog world
By Jim Caple
Page 2 columnist

Editor's Note: Takeru Kobayashi won the world hot dog eating contest on the Fourth of July, breaking his own world record with 50½ hot dogs -- but the victory did not come without controversy. Check out Darren Rovell's full report from Coney Island.

The blue whale is the largest animal on Earth. A newborn calf weighs three tons and drinks 100 gallons of its mother's fat-rich milk per day, gaining as much as eight pounds an hour. During summer feeding seasons, the adult blue whale eats 8,000 pounds of shrimplike krill per day to maintain its 70-ton weight.

Amateur.

Takeru Kobayashi revolutionized the hot dog eating world with his "Solomon" technique.
If you really want to see an impressive eater, check out the Nathan's Famous world hot dog eating contest on the Fourth of July at Coney Island. Begun in 1916, the contest is to hot dog eating what Augusta is to golf, bringing together 20 champion hot dog eaters from around the world. Think your Uncle Ned can put away an embarrassing number of hot dogs at your Fourth of July picnic? Two years ago, Kazutoyo Arai ate an astounding 25½ hot dogs in 12 minutes to set the world record. Can you imagine that? Twenty-five and a half hot dogs in 12 minutes? More than two hot dogs a minute? Most people could barely believe it.

And then Japan's Takeru Kobayashi won the contest last year when he ate 50.

Kodiak Bear Fact Sheet/ Alaska (http://www.state.ak.us/adfg/wildlife/region2/hunting/trivia.htm)

http://www.state.ak.us/adfg/wildlife/region2/hunting/kbb5.gif

Vitals-10' tall when on his hind legs, and 5' when on all four legs. They weigh up to 1,500 pounds

<LI>Though Kodiak bears are often touted as the world's largest land carnivore (meat eaters), they are really omnivores (using a variety of foods). They actually spend more time eating grass, plants and berries than meat. Fish are an important part of their diets, but few Kodiak bears expend the time or effort necessary to chase and kill mammals.

<LI>Bears use the most nutritious parts of their food to maximize their weight gain. Grass and forbs are only used while they are rapidly growing in the spring and early summer. Brains, flesh and eggs are preferred parts of the salmon. Internal organs of deer, elk and cattle are eaten first when one is killed or scavenged. Berries are used most often when they are ripe and sugars are at their highest level.

<LI>Bears are naturally diurnal (active during the day), but when faced with competition for food or space, they adopt a more nocturnal (active at night) life style.

<LI>Bears do not defend territories, but they do have traditional areas that they use each year (home ranges). Because of the rich variety of foods available on Kodiak, bears here have some of the smallest home ranges of any brown bear population.

<LI>Mating season for Kodiak bears is during May and June. They are serially monogamous (having one partner at a time), staying together for a couple days or a couple weeks. As soon as the egg is fertilized and divides a few times, it enters a state of suspended animation until autumn when it finally implants on the uterine wall and begins to grow again.
