(January 16, 2003) -- Maxim Afinogenov participated in his first team practice of the season, albeit without contact since suffering a concussion before the Sabres opened training camp in September. Afinogenov was struck above the left eye with an errant slap shot in his native Russia while training for the upcoming season.
"My first practice went well. It's good to be having fun with the guys again," Afinogenov said. "I am really excited about getting back in action".
Buffalo Sabres Head Coach Lindy Ruff intimates that Afinogenov is coming along very well and Sabre fans should get ready for the speedy Russian to make his return, "I would anticipate him getting cleared by early next week when we return for this road trip, " Ruff said. "We need to get him into a full contact practice first, though. He is in excellent shape but he has to take some bumps and get his timing back." Max was the Sabres' third-leading goal scorer last season with a career-high 21 and added 19 assists.
