Coaching carousel moves toward fresh faces

Of the 52 sideline bosses fired between 1995 and 2001, more than two-thirds were back in the league in some capacity in 2002, several of them employed for a second or third time as head coaches.

Dumped by the Chicago Bears after the '98 season, and following six years in which he compiled a 41-57 record, Dave Wannstedt completed a climb back up the ladder when he succeeded Jimmy Johnson at Miami in 2000. Fired by Carolina in 1998, Dom Capers resurfaced this year as the head coach of the expansion Houston Texans. Marty Schottenheimer is with a fourth team after being essentially jettisoned in the past by the Cleveland Browns, Kansas City Chiefs and Washington Redskins.

The NFL at least does a better job at getting 1st time coaches than the other leagues.

NHL, NBA, and MLB - If a coach has a successful season on his resume' , he's good for 3-4 more head coaching jobs. Look at Pat Burns, Mike Keenan

A lot has to do with the size of the staff. Football has staffs of 8-12 coaches, these other leagues have 1 HC and 2-3 assistants.

The Peter principle works in football. You get promoted until you reach your level of incompetency. Many of the top coordinators were or will be ex- head coaches. (Wade Phillips/ Gillbride/ LeBeau/ Ray Rhodes/ ect...ect...ect....) 50-50 chance Marvin Lewis is a DC somewhere in the league in 3-4 years
