Some have had their fill of the Bowl

It's the time of the year again when American football fans work themselves into a frenzy over the Super Bowl on Sunday week, and the advertising industry gets excited about the ads surrounding the coverage.

As usual, the price of Super Bowl adds are an indicator of the business. If prices fall, recession looms; if they rise, good times could be ahead. The peak was achieved three years ago during dotcom lunacy.

Then, companies nobody had ever heard of spent as much as $3m (and that was just for the airtime, let alone the costs of making the ad) on a 30-second slot. A year later, most had disappeared, and prices fell. Ditto for 2002.

So prices going up for ads is a good sign.
