Ted Cotrell may be on 49ers short list

SAN DIEGO -- A person familiar with the situation says Jets defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell may be on the San Francisco 49ers' short list of head coaching candidates to replace the fired Steve Mariucci and could get an interview for the job.

I like Ted. I hope he gets the job.

Besides, I don't want to listen to him carry on about racism in the NFL again.

Cottrell has 'get-acquainted session' with Donahue

SAN DIEGO -- Just one day after receiving permission from the New York Jets to discuss their head coaching opening with Ted Cottrell, San Francisco 49ers officials on Friday contacted the popular defensive coordinator to set in motion the interview process.

League sources here for the Super Bowl, and a source close to Cottrell, told ESPN.com that the longtime league assistant would almost certainly meet with San Francisco officials sometime next week.

Cottrell was contacted by general manager Terry Donahue and the two men had a brief conversation termed a "get-acquainted session" by one source.
