Re: gadget plays suck...
the secret to gadget plays is to know when to have the personnel to run them

I kind of felt sorry for Cincy. Why is Lewis a moron? He at least got them into the playoffs.

So, if Mularkey was still on Cowher's staff, he'd be a genius tonight... but since he doesn't happen to be there, he's a moron. Right?

Re: gadget plays suck...
Gadget plays have a time and a place.
They need to be momentum changers. Pittsburgh gave us two gadget plays, one used to perfection and the other one ill-timed.
The game was still close, Pittsburgh had been pounding the ball all day, and that flea flicker for the TD was perfect. They had a college QB set it up (Randel El) Roethlesberger was the "swing man" and the Bengals bit it. It was a gutty call, but it was at the right place & time.
Then in the 4th quarter, the Steelers tried another trick play inside the red zone. Up 11, Randel El again was given the ball on the reverse and looking to pass. It was a terrible call at the worst time.
1) Pitt already had momentum, a botched trick play would have swung the game to Cincy. Especially if it resulted in a turnover.
2) That close to the end zone, the Cincy defense, if fooled, had opportunity to recover. It's not like "Oh ****...!!"and that the Steelers WRs were long gone behind them
3) Just pound the ball at the Bengals- That would have killed and demoralized them. Game over right there.
4) I'm sure after getting burned, they were waiting for more gadget plays. Gadget plays used over and over again aren't trick plays anymore.

Re: gadget plays suck...
Am I the only one who saw that the trick play that went for a touchdown should have been an easy false start? Number 81 was running diagonally forward before the play started. Normally it wouldn't even have anything to do with the play, but it allowed him to pick up an early, key block.

Re: gadget plays suck...
As it has already been said, time, place, and appropriate people in order to make them work. They don't even need to be elaborate, a well timed direct snap to the half back can do plenty of damage. There was a real sweet fake in one of the bowl games (too many don't remember which) where the hand off was faked to the hb but insted given to the fb, It was only done once and went for very decent yardage. It took almost no time to develop and was executed very well. And had it not worked the worst that could have happened was no gain so there is some "trickery" that not only works, but is safe to try as well.
