    Mike Singletary

Looks like the Lions are going to interview Singletary for the HC position. Now, from my experience, he hasn't had the time in grade to jump up to the HC position. But, everytime an analysis mentions Singletary's name, they have nothing but great things to say about him. How he's an amazing motivator, smart, and ready for the challenge.

I'm interested to hear some of your thoughts on this.

Wasn't he only the LB coach for Baltimore?

Not even a season of DC under his belt, and they wanna make him HC?

That's an awfully big risk for Matt Millen who is already despised by most Detroit fans.

That's what I thought as well.

I heard them talking about him yesterday on Sirius and they said he actually jumped in to pads to show guys how to shed blocks in practice one day.

I think fiery players of his caliber don't necessarily make good coaches. I'm not saying it can't happen and he wouldn't make a decent coach, and there are exceptions in many sports — but they're exceptions.

I'm having a hard time thinking of recent great players that became great coaches in the NFL (maybe Landry as an all-pro), because all I can think of is Art Schell, a great player but mediocre in the coaching ranks. Or Herm Edwards. Great player sure, but average coach if that.

I think most of the best coaches we've seen in recent decades we’re either average players or only played college ball: Belichick. Parcells. Shula. Gruden. Madden. Cowher.

I think the greater the player, the more they expect those under them to play like they did, and it‘s just not possible, so frustration builds in.

On what basis do you say Herm Edwards is an average coach?

"On what basis do you say Herm Edwards is an average coach?"

His record. Based on regular season W-L record of the current five-year period going back to his start:

                    Edwards: 39-41

Brian Billick his first five years including a SB win: 47-33
                    his recent five: 42-38

                    Jim Haslett: 35-45

                    Jeff Fisher: 39-41

Mike Tice (4 seasons and 1 game): 32-33

                    Marty Schottenheimer: 41-39

                    Holmgren: 48-32

And I gotta whip out the Wade:

Wade Phillips: 47-36 (including 3 games into 2003 season)

And compared to the guys in the list:

Art Shell: 54-38 his only five years.

                    Bill Belichick: 58-22

Don Shula his last five years as coach: 47-33

                    Bill Cowher: 55-24

Bill Parcells: his most recent five: 42-38

                    Jon Gruden: 45-35

                    Madden: 56-16

Yep. And didn’t he blow some key calls prior to settling for a FG in the SD game?
