Jerry reportedly wants Emmitt back ... as a backup

The Dallas Cowboys would like running back Emmitt Smith to return to the team next year, but only in a backup role, according to a published report.

The Dallas Morning News reported Thursday that Smith, who became the NFL's all-time rushing leader this season, will meet next week with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. According to a team source, Jones will tell Smith if the running back wishes to return to the team, it will not be as a starter.

The source also told the paper Jones will tell Smith the team will restructure his contract and will give him permission to negotiate with other teams. Smith would be released from his contract if he finds a team that wants him as a starter, according to the report.
